Story
Shay grew up on a tough Manchester council estate where drugs and gangs were rife. A life of crime would have been an easy path to take. So it went against everything that was expected of him when he joined the police. It wouldn't be long before Shay's prodigious talent caught the attention of the top. Then came the call that changed his life: an offer to join the secret level one undercover unit known as Omega. And it was easy to see why they wanted him; he wouldn't have to stray too far from what he already knew.

Neil ‘Sam’ Samworth worked as a prison officer for 12 years, many of them in HMP Manchester, more commonly known as Strangeways. It’s bad enough for the staff - but what is it really like to be banged up in a category A prison with some of the country’s most dangerous offenders? In this shocking pause-resister, Sam tracks down some of Strangeways' 'ex customers' and recounts their experiences in gripping detail.

Picture a man, he’s tall, not excessively so, yet as wide as he is high. This man is a spitting and growling street brawler; a tank full of ready-to-blow, muscle-fuelled aggression. Imagine, if you will, the comic-book style Bulldog of Great British stamp. Well, there you have him! The prototypical face taken from the terraces of an ’80s football fan’s rolled-up newspaper cosh; a poster-boy of malevolence left over from Thatcher’s post-punk Britain.

MRF Shadow Troop confirms there was such an agenda in the early, chaotic days of British military intervention across the Irish Sea. Summary
For more than 20 years, the most intense and prolonged gang war in British history raged on the streets of Manchester. Warring factions left at least 40 dead and made headlines across the world. This best-selling account tells how vicious battles for control of drugs, turf, and protection rackets blighted the reputation of one of Europe's most dynamic cities and saw the coining of the sinister epithet "Gunchester".
By acclaimed investigative author Peter Walsh, Gang War is a powerful and disturbing account of an extraordinary crime phenomenon.

Fantastic story but challenging story telling
I found his fascinating. A real insight into the gang culture and a shocking realisation of the deaths and the people involved
My only criticism was the sometimes child like grammar and use of direct speech …. “…..” said the DCI
“……” she said. Got quite frustrating and distracted from the excellent story
The narration became a bit melodramatic and fake accented at times, again just a criticism of the audio version.
