Story
Shay grew up on a tough Manchester council estate where drugs and gangs were rife. A life of crime would have been an easy path to take. So it went against everything that was expected of him when he joined the police. It wouldn't be long before Shay's prodigious talent caught the attention of the top. Then came the call that changed his life: an offer to join the secret level one undercover unit known as Omega. And it was easy to see why they wanted him; he wouldn't have to stray too far from what he already knew.

This is my account of life as a hitman from someone who has been doing it for years. Hitmen commit heinous crimes virtually every day of the week and, in most instances, we don't even realise. I've been a killer for hire for more than 20 years now, but life as a fulltime professional assassin has never been easy. There have been close calls, failed attempts and a lot of looking over my shoulder. And now, I've decided to come clean and seek atonement for my life as a murderer and one of the most covertly dangerous men alive.

On 22 February 2006, GBP53 million was stolen from a cash warehouse belonging to the Securitas company in Tonbridge, Kent. In terms of value, the robbery puts previous British capers, such as the Great Train Robbery, in the shade. This was a crime notable for its audacity, carried out by an unlikely crew of players that included a used car salesman, two Albanian casual workers and a roofer. Five men were convicted at the Old Bailey in January 2008, which attracted nationwide media coverage.

Summary
9.30 a.m. on 22 January 1993. The moment in crime history that one of Britain's most audacious thefts ever took place and the legend of 'Fast Eddie' was created.
This is the story of how Securicor guard Eddie Maher managed to pull off a £1.2 million heist, fled the country despite every port being closed, spawned an international manhunt and managed to evade capture for 20 years. As Britain's most wanted man, he led 30 detectives, FBI and Interpol on a wild goose chase across the USA.
Dubbed 'Fast Eddie' by the press, he was always one step ahead, and after two decades on the run with his family using a series of of aliases and identities, Eddie began to think he'd committed the perfect crime, until a cruel and dramatic betrayal proved otherwise....
Like a Hollywood movie script and told in full for the first time, Fast Eddie is the compelling story of how an ordinary British man became America's most notorious fugitive.

Loved it
Tbh, I pre-ordered this book because of the promise of Karl Jenkison as a narrator and the fact that the summary looked interesting. It came out this morning and I have listened to it in one go. It was that interesting. I didn't know anything about the story beforehand, which made it all the more interesting.
Eddie Maher has lived quite an extraordinary and interesting live. I was mostly fascinated bu the fact that he could live such a functional live under being constantly on his guard. It is excellently explained how he did that.
I love his optimistic view on live and have the greatest respect for his wife Debbie who had to deal with his shenannigans, but chose to stay with him.
This is a funny, interesting and very unusual memoir which I couldn't recommend more. I loved it from beginning till the end and wish Eddie and his family all the best in the future.
Wherever that may be..

Spoiler alert - it wasn't his fault. Any of it. Blames crooks, police incompetence, other people's nosiness...
I own my failings and learn from them (and there's plenty to go at!). Think Eddy should do the same.

Always someone elses fault.
Somewhat interesting when talking about how he did it, but the rest is just moaning about the justice system and how Eddy was victimised after he was caught.
You can't steal a million pounds and call yourself a nice guy constantly (trying to convince himself) and expect no repercussions when it all comes crumbling down. Had a plane and boats and built his own home with stolen money, but then expects everyone to jump to get him a passport to be brought back to be tried.
