Summary

The historical must-listen for the autumn, perfect for fans of A Discovery of Witches and Outlander.

Years after the Salem witch trials one witch remains. She just doesn’t know it… yet.

Growing up Lydia Montrose knew she was descended from the legendary witches of Salem but was warned to never show the world what she could do and so slowly forgot her legacy. But Willow Hall has awoken something inside her…

1821: Having fled family scandal in Boston Willow Hall seems an idyllic refuge from the world, especially when Lydia meets the previous owner of the house, John Barrett.

But a subtle menace haunts the grounds of Willow Hall, with strange voices and ghostly apparitions in the night, calling to Lydia’s secret inheritance and leading to a greater tragedy than she could ever imagine.

Can Lydia confront her inner witch and harness her powers or is it too late to save herself and her family from the deadly fate of Willow Hall?

A Good Story

I tend to listen to audio books in bed as a way of relaxing before I go to sleep. The story was set at a pleasant pace; with parts that gripped me here and there that made me want to know what happened next, even though I had promised myself I would stop at the end of the chapter to go to sleep! It also ended on a satisfying note. Lauren Ezzo's voice is pleasant to listen to, although personally I sometimes wish that when a male character speaks, a male actor reads the spoken words. I always find a female voice reading a man's line in a deep voice somewhat comical. Still, it was a book I enjoyed listening to, and know I will happily listen to it again sometime in the future.

Highly enjoyable

I would say this is a borderline YA novel.
As a debut novel it kept me reading as I was eager to find out more about the characters and their dynamics. I found Catherine about as deep as a muddy puddle as just as unpleasant.

The secrets were unraveled slowly but oh boy were they worth waiting for.

Very different to expectation

This type of story is most definitely not something I would choose to read. Regardless of what the synopsis says, this is a love story in the vain of how I imagine the likes of pride and prejudice would play out. it's a pity the author chose to go that route as there is potential here, but I guess love struck women and their pounding hearts sells better. well written but not for me.

Not what was expected…

Sadly this book is more of a love story and a novel about family secrets, than any kind of supernatural gothic novel. It had the odd few mentions of witchcraft thrown in to justify the title and synopsis but the love triangles between the characters was clearly the focus in this novel. Not bad if you want a love story…

Enjoyable

Liked this book very much.
But the American lady reading it spoilt it abit for me as the "erbs" instead of "herbs" was annoying.
Apart from that it was very good listening.
Love witchy stories.

My first experience of this author

I am myself a pagan witch and so am automatically drawn to any book with witch/magick/spellcaster etc in the title. This was, literally, my only reason for choosing this book. I did hope it was going to be more historically correct and include more about the Salem witch trials, so although I enjoyed the somewhat predictable storyline, I was rather disappointed by the lack of realism. But it was advertised as fiction, so only to be expected. The narration of a lot of audible books puts my teeth on edge...American pronunciation, names being pronounced differently from one chapter to the next, etc. I much prefer to hold a book in my own hands and read it myself, but as I'm long term disabled, this isn't always possible; so audible are fantastic at keeping boredom away. I wish there was more care taken when selecting narrators. Some have been downright unbearable. I have over 100 books in my library and have only ever returned 3.. one was a duplicate, as the artwork on the cover changed and I thought it was new; one was abridged and the other was a new, recent, bundle of utter balderdash, that I can't remember the title of, and only managed to bear about half of the rot. So audible do a great job and I get the chance to try new authors. Some go on to become favourites, others get forgotten about immediately. This author is not likely to become a favourite but will not be forgotten either. I am going to try another book and see how that goes. A very easy listen, great for bedtime and falling asleep to. Make use of the "end of chapter" setting.

Totally awesome

This story is full of suspense and passion. I had to listen in just two sittings, it was riveting. I can't wait to read more by this author. Excellently narrated.
