Summary

The brand-new gripping historical novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Lady of Hay!

Mercia, 788 AD

In the grand Saxon halls of Mercia, King Offa rules with cold ambition. His youngest daughter, Eadburh, is destined for an arranged marriage, but with reckless spirit, her heart is taken by a Welsh prince, a man she can never be matched with and who is quickly and cruelly taken from her.

Eadburh inherited her father’s ruthless ways, but it’s the gifts passed down from her mother that are far more dangerous. She is determined to carve her own place in the world, yet her path could cause war.

Offa’s Dyke, 2021

In a cottage hidden amongst the misty Welsh hills of Offa’s Dyke, Bea Dalloway is called to help Simon Armstrong, who is searching for peace. Instead he finds himself disturbed by unsettling noises and visions.

It isn’t long before Bea is also swept up by haunting dreams. The past is whispering to them, calling out for the truth to be told at last. And as dreams and reality weave closer together, Bea and Simon must be strong to resist the pull of the past—and its desire for revenge....

The Sunday Times best-selling author returns with a thrilling tale of lost love, betrayal and secrets that have lain buried over a thousand years....

Critic reviews

“Barbara Erskine is an astonishingly good writer. I have always been a massive fan and admirer of her talent. I feel that she has written this book especially for me. It has everything I love, and is so compelling I drop everything to get back to it. Warmth, depth, mystery, magic and the supernatural, I’m just so excited to be engrossed in such a beautiful book!" (Santa Montefiore, best-selling author)

"A dazzling roller-coaster of a book that will thrill, enchant and intrigue those who love history and the supernatural." (Alison Weir, best-selling author)

"The story of Eadburh is brilliantly imagined and the novel is so atmospheric and suspenseful, full of myth and magic and hauntings...such vivid and well-rounded characters. Wild Wales and the contrasting ordered life of the Cathedral are beautifully evoked, too." (Rachel Hore, best-selling author)

Spoiled by narrator

As a Welsh woman I found the narration of the Welsh characters appalling and I had to stop listening to it. Also the male English accents were hardly better.
Barbara Erkskine is a fantastic story teller but it was completely ruined by the poor stereotypical narration

The dream weaver

Intriguing story but let down by the narrator!
All the male characters were terrible and the 15 year old son sounded like a cartoon character!

My mistake

I thought this was going to be an historical novel. It is not what I thought it would be and through no fault of the author, really not a book that interests me. The narrator is ok, but her Welsh accent is dreadful and veers towards Pantomime Indian on many occasions.

Story up to standard

Excellent as usual just wish the narrator would just read and stop the awful voices for different characters.

Great storytelling

I absolutely love Barbara Erskine’s books and have done since I read The Lady of Gay years ago. Having said that, I cannot believe that you could not find a better narrator. She is shockingly bad and yet there are so many fantastic narrators out there.
If she reads the next one I will buy a paper copy and read it myself.

Absolutely fantastic story. A must for all fans new and old

Another brilliant book by Barbara Erskine, I’d actually say her the best one yet.
The story just draws you in straight away, when i was not listening to it , i was thinking about it.
The characters are so relatable and i became invested in them all.
Even though the story is not something that would happen to most of us in real life , it remained believable and enthralling.
Jelly Bonds narration is perfect and enhances the whole experience.
I can’t recommend this book enough.
I’m gutted its finished even though i couldn’t stop listening to it.

Great story, lovely history

I really enjoyed the story, found the historical depictions fascinating. BE has definitely returned to her best form in recent books. I wasn't to keen on the narrator though - like others have said, the male voices are almost like pantomime voices! And I really wish they could find someone who doesn't butcher the Welsh pronunciations!

Great story, dreadful narration

The story was great, lots of interesting information about that particular period of time, but totally spoilt by the extremely condescending and patronising tone of the narrator. Will not be listening to anything else narrated by her,

Fantastic

this book is amazing, historically correct most characters existed..she weaves a tale that allows us to see what may of happened to one of the main character's lives hundreds of years ago x

Superb writing!

This is yet another masterpiece by BRbara Erskine, I can't wait to read more. The descriptive writing entices you in to the story, and holds you until the end. Brilliantly narrated by Jill Bond.
