Summary

Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

Loved it

The 2 threads work well, my favourite was the girls.
The characters are likeable.
Felt the ending pushes boundaries but is well executed and I was happy to get onboard with it, or else with the genre you end up with the same over done scenarios. This one is imaginative and inventive.

This had my full attention

This was the first Minka Kent book I've read and it had my full attention from start to finish. Granted some aspects of the story were not very believable or were too convenient to the story, but it was still very entertaining and lead me to read more from this author. The narration was brilliant.

Really enjoyed this although some parts pushing realism a little!

Found this book to be gripping and interesting. You do need to be prepared to take on board some ‘artistic licence’ to make this storyline work. But it ticked all the boxes for me. Having had no choice but to rely on audiobooks for a bit I’ve become a bit jaded and can get distracted but I raced through this with full attention. I’ll try another from Minka in the future!

Started great, went downhill .

I really enjoyed this at the beginning. Even searching for more books by the author. unfortunately 3/4 ways through it turned into a soppy unbelievable Mills and Boon novel. completely far fetched and cheesy. could finish the last couple of chapters.

All the Stars

This book was sooooo good! It had everything I love ... mystery, family drama, likable characters, fast moving, & surprises. The narration was excellent. My only complaint ... it had to end.

Still waiting......

Still waiting for Minka Kent to write another "5-star" book. Unfortunately, THE STILLWATER GIRLS did not even come close to earning "5 stars" from me.

The plot was very, very contrived and lacked credibility:
1) The way the author had the two families meeting was not very believable.
2) The husband's secret was preposterous and was also not very believable.

My very, very favorite Minka Kent book was THE THINNEST AIR. Minka Kent's books have gotten better with each new release but this book was an exception.

Believe them

Believe the reviews that say this is terrible because it is. It is so far fetched that is to its an understatement to say far fetched. I’m gonna try and get my credit back

This book is not good.

This is probably the worst book I’ve heard on audible. The story is ridiculous, but not in a good way. This author totally phoned it in.

Don’t listen to the bad reviews

This book was an amazing journey! The writer did such a great job that I almost felt what the main character felt. Never could have guessed the ending!

Sadly....

I just couldn't get into this book. I loved the thinnest air & was very excited for this book. But, no it was a real snooze.

Plot twist!!

The first third of the book was pretty slow at times but then it really picked up. Did great job of alternate voices of wren and Nicolette. Was easy to follow. Would buy from this author again.

Easy vacation read.

This is a good -sit on the beach- read. Doesn't require much mental involvement and the plot moves along fairly smoothly. By the time you're finished with the book you can easily transition into something else.
