Summary

Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

This had my full attention

This was the first Minka Kent book I've read and it had my full attention from start to finish. Granted some aspects of the story were not very believable or were too convenient to the story, but it was still very entertaining and lead me to read more from this author. The narration was brilliant.

Really enjoyed this although some parts pushing realism a little!

Found this book to be gripping and interesting. You do need to be prepared to take on board some ‘artistic licence’ to make this storyline work. But it ticked all the boxes for me. Having had no choice but to rely on audiobooks for a bit I’ve become a bit jaded and can get distracted but I raced through this with full attention. I’ll try another from Minka in the future!

Loved it

The 2 threads work well, my favourite was the girls.
The characters are likeable.
Felt the ending pushes boundaries but is well executed and I was happy to get onboard with it, or else with the genre you end up with the same over done scenarios. This one is imaginative and inventive.

Started great, went downhill .

I really enjoyed this at the beginning. Even searching for more books by the author. unfortunately 3/4 ways through it turned into a soppy unbelievable Mills and Boon novel. completely far fetched and cheesy. could finish the last couple of chapters.
