Summary

The throne is Valroy’s for the taking...but first, he needs a queen.

As the son of the Morrigan and heir to the vacant Unseelie throne, Valroy itches to shed the mantle of prince and take his place as king. To his great regret one ancient tradition stands in his way, demanding he first take a bride. With all the members of the Unseelie court proving to be insufferable, what is a prince to do?

Steal a human, of course.

Abigail often wonders if the townsfolk aren’t right in calling her cursed. Abandoned by her husband and with no family to call her own, everything in her life hangs by a thread. Never did she expect her downfall would come by taking pity on an old hermit. Abducted into the dangerous world of Tir n’Aill, Abigail is thrust into a terrifying Maze that defies all logic. There, she finds herself at the mercy of an Unseelie prince with a strange offer—solve his Maze and he'll grant her deepest wish....

If she can live that long.

From author Kathryn Ann Kingsley comes this tantalizing slow-burn dark fantasy that proves sometimes the line between love and hate is razor-thin.

Fabulous story, middling narrator.

The story is magical, twisted and enthralling. The narrator is talented—he does regional accents well—but his florid style is not suited for this story. Especially for a female protagonist (his weakest accent).

Wow

One of my preferred retellings of the story of Hades and Persephone is one that stands out for its realistic and faithful adherence to the original myth. As someone who tends to be critical of adaptations that stray too far from the source material, I appreciate the care taken to stay true to the original story. This particular retelling maintains the integrity of the myth, which made it all the more enjoyable to read.

I must say that I found the depiction of romance in this book to be truly captivating. The way in which it was presented was nothing short of beautiful, and it left me feeling completely mesmerized. The storyline of two enemies gradually falling in love was executed with an almost perfect balance of emotional intensity and tension, and I found myself completely spellbound by it. Overall, I would say that this book is an absolute must-read for anyone who appreciates a good love story, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre of literature.

In all honesty, I must admit that Valroy was not exactly a model citizen, and his moral compass could be quite questionable at times. Nonetheless, it was truly fascinating to observe how he gradually became completely enamored with her. Witnessing this beautiful transformation was an experience that I thoroughly relished.

Great narrator let down by poor plot

I love this narrator but firstly I’m not sure they were the right choice for the characters as none of them speak with a Scottish accent despite being based in Scotland. Secondly the plot it’s terrible. I’m dnfing it as it’s just about some poor girl who gets abducted and is essentially constantly threatened with rape and she wanders around complaining about her life all the time. No thank-you

The narrator doesn't work well

I loved Joel for the Heart of Dracula series but he doesn't work for this book. Valroy seems like he would read slightly alluring, I know I'm meant to be drawn to him despite his awfulness, but Joel's voice is too weighed down and drawn out. I'm going to keep listening and might update my review but I really think someone else, maybe a woman, should read this.

UPDATED
Once I got used to the narrator and could focus on the story I was addicted. About to dive into Book 2.

wish I had read not listened to it

had to stop half way, unfortunately in my own opinion the person reading the book is very over dramatic and only has one tone when reading, and for that I was taken out the story and coudnt connect to the characters.

death is at every turn.

Such a dark yet fantastic story, I enjoyed this so much. Valroy is both ravishing and terrifying, Abigail is a tragically unlucky woman with quite the adventure ahead of her, it really makes for a brutal but exciting storyline that keeps you engrossed. There's bits that are rather gory, and some extremely sensual parts. Make sure you are old enough to listen or read this, I feel that it's for mature adults.

Great story

I am so surprised this title popularity isn't higher. Book is funny, story is great, written for adults. The voice actor is slightly annoying, sounds too posh but some accents he does are impressive. I really enjoyed listening to it.
