Summary

'Megan Bannen has created a world that you'll never want to leave and characters that will carve a spot into your heart. This series is playfully unique, delightfully steamy, utterly romantic, and overall unmissable!' Ali Hazelwood

The Princess Bride meets You've Got Mail in this enchantingly quirky, completely refreshing fantasy with a rom-com-worthy premise.

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the magical wilds of Tanria. It's an unforgiving job, and he's got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.

Mercy never has a moment to herself. She's been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart-ache Hart, the man with a knack for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.

After yet another run-in with Merciless Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to "A Friend". Much to his surprise, he receives an anonymous reply, and a tentative friendship is born. Little does Hart know he's baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most. . .

Set in a world equally full of magic and demigods as it is donuts and small-town drama, this utterly unique fantasy is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Credible world.

The characters felt credible. Some of the dialogue felt overly cheesy, especially the "we are family" feel of the ending. However, I did like it and will probably read her next book.

I loved the world, and the premise. The gothic feel at the beginning with the undertaking and the marshal at work, was brilliant and exciting.

I do feel like the two protagonists moments could have been more powerful if they had more time alone at the end. I guess that's not what the theme is about though. It was sweet and I routed for them.

It was good and I was left with that feeling like I've just had a nice cup of tea. Content.

I do recommend

Beautiful story

I’m really glad I took a chance on this one. I love an “enemies to lovers” slow burn romance with a fantastical twist and this delivered perfectly. Grounded characters within a magical but believable world, with some good action parts too! Give it a try, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Can’t wait for the next in the series to be released!

Original & unusual love/death story

I always love listening to 2 narrators in a book and the storyline is original and quirky. I would certainly recommend

A cosy romantic book about undertakers.

No real surprises but just what I was looking for. A cosy romance with a pile of dead bodies and a giant rabbit postman. Some great characters and interesting twists and turns on the way to a very satisfying ending

Narration let this one down

I really liked this story, it was a cute fantasy version of “you’ve got mail” but the woman who did Mercy’s parts had a really strange almost mechanical way of talking that really took me out of the story. The man doing Hart’s parts mispronounced a few words (apoplectic, brassiere) but on the whole was much better. Still worth listening to though :)

I loved this

I find it quite difficult to find books I really love, and I took a chance on this one after searching through Audible. I'm so glad I did! I loved this! I loved the characters and found the story really lovely to listen to. I love a romance but find normal 'chick lit' books boring. My favourite romances are set in an interesting world with much more going on than just the romance storyline, and this book really delivered that. I found Hart so endearing and was really rooting for him.

I want to hear more from this author!!

Wasn't expecting to be that good!

Well it was unexpectedly good. (No-for-a-reason)-enemies to lovers isn't usually my cup of tea but this story really worked for me. First of all, I appreciated that the MCs where on their thirties and it wasn't another YA romance. Both the MCs and the secondary characters where very likable and relatable. I liked how the book touched topics as loneliness, life and death and family bonds. My favorite -of course- was Hart. He was ticking all the right boxes. The narrator matched perfectly the character. I laughed out loud with Hart's - Bassareus dialogs. The world building was beautifully done without wore you out with useless details or having holes. All in all a great listening for me that I totally recommend.
