Summary

Winner of the Costa First Novel Award 2018

A brilliantly original high-concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception by way of Agatha Christie.

'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder, and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.'

It is meant to be a celebration, but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden - one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party - can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath....

Fantastic and Original

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved this book. It was action all the way but you needed to pay attention as it had a complex plot. Took the time travel concept and reworked it in a totally original way. Can't wait for more from this author.

Confusing

An interesting idea, well narrated and with real potential. However, the plot was incredibly confusing, particularly as an audio, and I kept having to go back and relisten to sections. I also thought it was over long and the ending lacked impact. Almost all the characters in the novel were vile so I found it difficult to care about them and at times the plot really dragged. I'm afraid this one wasn't really for me.

Overlong and confusing!

I would never have got to the end if it hadn’t been the “audible” version. I persevered whilst doing housework and gardening .

Keep on going!

I was really tempted to send this one back when I started listening. The narrator is... shall we say passionate... about it, which is great but was really overbearing, especially with the intakes of breath. BUT I pushed on through, and in the end really enjoyed this one.

If you're feeling the same as I did, I urge you to just give it a little more time, and hopefully you'll get drawn in enough. I am unsure if I just got used to the narrator, or if somewhere after chapter 3 or 4 somebody said "look Jot, mate... calm down a bit would you"

One of those I only finished to see...

...if the author could get himself out of the tangle he'd created! It made me think a lot, though not so much about the plot and characters as how he might have gone about constructing something so complex: were his walls covered in index cards, with details of characters and timelines, which he moved around as he worked his way through, emitting sinister giggles to himself? Either way it helped pass the time while things counted down to the denouement and more than once I had to check how many hours there were left as it ground on. Enjoyable If you like convoluted country house murder mysteries, but this one gets there slipping and sliding, with not a little cruelty, in the gore. Would I listen to it again? No. Is it up there with all-time favourite listens? No. Does this review tally with the majority that have come before, No...

Confusing

A complex story, not sure I understand it 🤣 It was well narrated, but too many twists

clever but not my cup of tea

cleverly written but I did not really enjoy and the ending was a missed opportunity to understand the true character of the main man

Complicated but interesting!

This needs full attention to keep up with all the twists and turns but clever and challenging and worth persisting! Well read

Original and tantalising

One of the most unusual books I've ever come across. Clever, intriguing and engaging. The plot - which is both dark and disconcerting - twists and twists, and sometimes feels a little too complicated. However that doesn't matter because the characters themselves are both confused and confusing.... and that's an essential part of the story. Nothing is what it seems, although some things are constant. And the story is about discovering what is, and what isn't. The ending is surprising but deeply satisfying and well worth the wait.
