Masterly

It took a little longer than expected to get into this, but once I got comfortable with the structure it was a delight. Some beautiful observations constructed into delightful sentences. Can't wait to read more Greene.

Great performance

A complex plot that needs more concentration than most audio books. Very well read which kept my interest.

Gardening and Listening

I mostly listen to audio books when gardening or walking. Graham Green's Stamboul Train is an excellent companion to both pursuits. The novel is has excellent characters, is intriguing and superbly read.

Brilliant performance

Fantastic narrator. Horrifically bigoted views that were par for the course back then. Makes one realise how far we have come in less than a hundred years.

The Stamboul Train

It was a long time since I had read a Greene and I was looking forward to listening to this on a few long drives in the car. To be fair the narrator had an easy style and kept the listener interest throughout. He was however a little too limited in the range of voices he had available for characterisation. In particular I thought the lead female voice was just wrong (even though she was supposed to have a deep voice)and another sounded just like her too. Unlike another reviewer, I did get to the end of the story, though I do think it suffered for the telling. All in all, I was a little disappointed

Bring back Tim Piggot-Smith

The Honorary Consul and The Comedians, both read by Tim Piggot-Smith, are without question the best Greene audiobooks. Sadly these no longer seem to be avilable and the narrators of the current crop do not quite come up to scratch.

The Orient Express but better

This for me is Greene at his best. Great characters fully developed, lovely setting (I love trains), cracking pacey plot. It is not his weightiest work but still thought provoking.

Intriguing and surprising

Where does Stamboul Train rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

An enjoyable "entertainment" to use Mr Greene's own description. At times overly descriptive to no real purpose but saved by the intrigue and characterization of the plot each time.

What did you like best about this story?

Its constant twists and turns and the use of the train as a 'vehicle' to introduce new characters and further interest into in the storyline.

What about Michael Maloney’s performance did you like?

Struggled a bit with the Mabel Green character but overall an excellent performance.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love and intrigue in the Balkans
