What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself. It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

Story
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Be careful who you invite to stay!
I bought this on the day of release and started listening straight away and I wasn't disappointed.
In The Magpies we had the neighbours from hell but in this book Mr Edwards brings us the in-laws from hell and the scenario is so scarily believable. He always writes such memorable characters but what a nasty, vile pair Lizzie and Jeff are! Elliott, on the other hand, I loved. As a scientist he is obviously intelligent but also hard working, charming and just lovely. And he's a cat-lover! And his house, which he has renovated with love sounds wonderful, though it is situated on Cuckoo Lane!
The book hurtles along, and I didn't want to stop listening. There is a claustrophobic, menacing feel to it which builds throughout the book. There are all the usual twists and turns, and a terrific ending …. that last sentence!!
James Langton is a terrific narrator, adding so much to my enjoyment of a brilliant book. Highly recommended.

my least favourite Mark Edwards story
I am a huge fan of Mark Edwards and came across him after reading follow you home and the devil's work. the narration is always really good by James Langton but I often find all femal e characters kind of sound the same but I guess that's due to a male doing the voices.
without giving away any spoilers I found it very easy to guess what was going on but this might be due to me already understanding Mark Edwards type of writing, I found the male main character to be quite weak and very clueless (the chapter in the restaurant gives too much away)
I don't regret listening to the story but it definitely isn't as good as marks other work

Over The Top!
Even though I enjoyed this book, it was too far fetched... Its premise was absurd, and just not plausible. How could such an upstanding, intelligent man be so darn naïve and willing to get involved in all the madness??? Talk about family secrets and being dysfunctional! The story had plenty of twists, ridiculous as they were. It kept me hooked, but the end fell a little short. However, J.L. did a nice job of performing the parts, and brought the characters to life.

His best book yet!
I absolutely love it! I had a nightmare of my own with a psychopath parent that refused to leave our home. It took over a year, the police and the courts, and so many obstacles kept popping up that we could not get rid of them. I actually completely 1000% could see how a situation like this could play out. Seriously parts of this were so close to home I wanted to scream. It honestly felt super cathartic to listen to. I loved how all the details wove together, and I think I enjoyed it more having listened to so many of Edwards books because I knew to pay close attention to all the details he writes as they are not just for descriptions but to weave the story. So many events in this book kept it very intriguing. The performance was perfect, the length was perfect. I wish I could write like this. I hope it is optioned for a movie or a series!

Pretty good book *small spoiler*
Overall, I feel like this was a pretty good book. The main character being so naive got a little annoying after a while. I also think it’s strange that he kept finding people dead and there was no further investigation on him.
I listened as an audiobook. It was a little hard because it was a man with a pretty deep voice performing and he made all the female characters sound whiny in an effort to make them sound like women. If you can get past that, it was fine.
