About this listen
'There are those who claim the ghosts walking the corridors of Sfântul Mihail are not ghosts at all.'
During a midnight journey snaking through the Carpathian Mountains, these are the words whispered to Cath Fenwick. It is the warning she will later wish she'd taken more seriously.
When Cath receives her invitation to The Event - a monetised retreat for social media influencers - she can't believe her luck. Irene Jobert is the most famous influencer in the world, and now Cath will be one of the five participants chosen to stay with Irene in a renovated Transylvanian monastery.
The catch? Their every move will be live-streamed to millions of people around the world. Patrons pay for constant access to their favourite social media stars: Irene, the model, Nathan, the gamer, Jules, the blogger, Daniel, the fitness guru and Cath, the writer. Nestled halfway up a mountain, surrounded by forests teeming with nature, the five are isolated, with nothing but the internet to connect them to the world. That is, until eagle-eyed live-stream followers all around the globe notice a sixth participant. A dark figure lurking in the background. Who - or what - is in the monastery with them?
Wolves roam the nearby forests. Shadows haunt the long corridors of Sfântul Mihail. Slowly, five lonely people begin to lose their minds. You are invited to The Event.

A modern social media influenced whodunnit
This is a very modern whodunnit where 5 social influencers have gathered in a spooky ex monastery (which was home to nuns and not monks) in Transylvania - Dracula country- for The Event where they will be streamed 24 hours a day to subscribers. The story is told by Cath, an author of fantasy novels. On arrival she finds out that the nuns who lived there were all slaughtered in 1946, and only the Abbess survived.
Sarah Denzil writes so well and the book had me hooked from the beginning. The suspense and menace builds throughout and I had goosebumps while listening, though I wouldn't class this as horror. The setting of the oppressive haunted monastery is described brilliantly, as are the surrounding mountains and the forests where wolves prowl. I liked Cath and her battles with her mental health felt realistic, though the other characters were all unlikeable. I loved the ending, which took me by surprise.
The narration by Robyn Addison was perfect for the book.

Get your fangs into this...
Whilst critics might consider the treatment of mental illness to be less than deft, the author's afterword and Denzil's assured reputation for pacy thrillers makes this a characteristically gripping story. Characteristic also are the flawed protagonists and uncertain alliances formed in trying conditions. Denzil never disappoints.

Enjoyed this..
… much better than I thought I would. I’m not very knowledgeable on social media so did wonder if I might struggle with this book. I didn’t at all. It was very different to anything I’ve listened to/read before. Some of it was far fetched but nonetheless still enjoyable

Filled the time
I don’t really know why I chose this book, I’ve never “done” social media. Not because I do not know how, but because I feel it is not conducive to good mental health, nor necessary for life! I do not need to know what someone else had for breakfast, I do not need someone to “like” me or to rant at me and I think many of today’s problems stem from these needs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but we don’t all need to know them. I know many love social media and reality programmes and that’s completely fine, we’re all different there’s something for everyone. That said, while this book was entirely predictable, it did fill the time.

Quite good
Not normally into this genre, but it does a very good job putting you in the moment. I felt it took a while before the big important stuff happened, but when it did it was quite enjoyable. Loved the narrator, good performance in my opinion, grasping the strain of situations among other things.

A terrifying masterpiece!
This has to be the best listen in a long time that had me holding my breath from beginning to end. The surprises continue throughout, and you never know which way things will go. Brilliantly written, and very well narrated. Thank you for this experience.
