Summary
"Brilliant, shocking and very creepy. Mark Edwards has done it again." - Elly Griffiths, bestselling author of the Dr Ruth Galloway series
A perfect summer. A perfect stranger. A perfect nightmare.
When British twenty-somethings Ruth and Adam are offered the chance to spend the summer housesitting in New York, they can’t say no. Young, in love and on the cusp of professional success, they feel as if luck is finally on their side.
So the moment that Eden turns up on the doorstep, drenched from a summer storm, it seems only right to share a bit of that good fortune. Beautiful and charismatic, Eden claims to be a friend of the homeowners, who told her she could stay whenever she was in New York.
They know you’re not supposed to talk to strangers - let alone invite them into your home - but after all, Eden’s only a stranger until they get to know her.
As suspicions creep in that Eden may not be who she claims to be, they begin to wonder if they’ve made a terrible mistake....
The House Guest is the chilling new psychological thriller from the three million copy bestselling author of Here to Stay and Follow You Home.

not his best work
Oh gosh this is a hard one for me. Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of Mark. I think his books like the Magpies and I Follow you home, Because she loves me and many more were for me in my opinion master pieces. His books always had me staring at the wall for sometime, just in sheer what did I just read pure happiness. But when Here to stay came out I was underwhelmed and this one I feel unfortunately the same. For me it's not that wow 100 shiny stars factor anymore. I understand the pressure and how hard it is to keep up with that high level, but I have to be true to how I feel with his latest books . Did I hate it, absolutely not. Am I going to buy his next new one ?...absolutely. Am I still going to recommend his books, damn sure I will. But this one is 3 stars from me

Really Boring
I'm a big fan of Mark Edwards, but he seems to have run out of steam with this one. Disappointingly, there's little originality in the story and the writing style is plain.
Mainly, it's NOT about a house guest, it's about a person being taken into a cult while somebody else runs around investigating what happened to them - asking lots of questions. The "cult" idea is nothing new, and the main story is just an investigation. Just lots of talk and questioning. YAWN!!
I couldn't relate to any of the characters, neither liked them nor hated them, and I really couldn't care less how it all turned out. I was glad when it was over. (Luckily less than 8 and a half hours long.)
I didn't like the narrators either. Will M. Watt made all the female characters sound like drag queens, especially the American ones.

Very Very Poor
This is the first review I've left for a book. I average around 5 audio books a month and have never failed to finish one, unlike this.
This book however is terrible (and I've loved most of his past books).
The plot is ridiculous, the characters poorly written and the narration just topped it off!
Avoid buying this as it is a waste of time and money.

The Perfect Summer?
Mark Edwards is superb. I haven’t read a book of his yet that I have not thoroughly enjoyed.
The House Guest did not let me down!
British couple Ruth and Adam - both an actress and a script writer - take up a house sitting venture in New York. When Eden turns up on their front door, soaked to the skin, their lives were about to change!
I don’t want to say a lot more as I am sure it will give away a lot of the plot.
If you like thrillers. Psychological thrillers - is that a thing - then you will like this book.
The characters are believable and the pages will keep turning.
Would thoroughly recommend.

Great story, a very dodgy accent at times
this was an enjoyable listen apart from a very annoying accent for one of the key characters. there are actually two narrators in this audio book, so rather than have a male doing a very poor attempt at portraying the female characters, and vice verse, why not have the female narrator doing the female characters and the man doing the male characters? it would have made the book far more easy to listen too that it actually was!
if you can get past the one dodgy accent, its well worth a listen. this is the third Mark Edwards book that I have listened too and I've enjoyed them all.

What??
I started out really liking this story. It was different than all the usual mysteries I have been finding, and that was really refreshing. There was a bit of eye rolling on my part a few times, but still kept my interest. But I have to say the end ruined the whole thing for me. Now I feel like I've wasted about 8 hours of my life on this almost could have been good book. Don't waste your time.

Blew Off Entire Day to Revel in this Book
What started as a casual listen morphed to a full-fledged commitment of "The House Guest." Author, Mark Edwards, has crafted a near-perfect psychological thriller in this latest release. Rest assured, this isn't your typical "stranger at the door," "amnesia incident," and/or "missing person" story so prevalent in this genre.
The audiobook is fast-paced, wild ride with many twists and turns. Also, has a wide range of characters whose actions keep you guessing as much as the story itself.

Strange & Creepy!
I think Mark Edwards is a very talented author & I've really liked many of his books. But this one was pretty far out there! This wasn't really a horror story but more of a mind ~trip genre. It was okay but not my type of storyline. So I think other readers will certainly enjoy it. I still look forward to reading more of Mark Edwards ' books.

Strong start, then wobbles all over the place
This was my first Mark Edwards book, and while I didn't love it, I found his writing interesting enough that I'd choose another of his books.
For me, The House Guest came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. With the exception of Adam, whose point of view most of the story is told from, I really didn't like or have any connection to any of these people. I found there were too many excuses made for Eden, and neither she, Ruth, nor Callum were ever consistently written. The final meetup between Eden, Ruth, and Adam felt like it was supposed to be some gotcha moment, but it really just fell flat. I couldn't help but wonder why Adam would let Eden get anywhere near him, despite the cardboard thin reasoning behind her actions against both him and Ruth.
Despite these criticism, I did enjoy the book when it focused on Adam, and only Adam. I thought his actions while trying to find Ruth were believable, if not always justified, and I was more invested in the story when I was in Adam's head. He was a likable, if naive guy who usually got in his own way. And I thought Edwards did a great job of getting me to sympathize with Adam the handful of times when his decision worked against him. I lost complete interest in Ruth in the final third, though I actually really did enjoy the chapters.
As far as the vocal performances go, the audiobook had two narrators. Will M. Watt performed when the story was focused on Adam, and Stina Nielsen performed when the action was focused on Ruth or Eden. I liked Watt's narration, but I found Nielsen distracting, and ultimately unnecessary. I'd give Watt's performance a solid 4/5, but I deducted a star overall because of Nielsen's lackluster reading.

my favorite Edwards book so far!
I have probably listened to 10 of his books. This one really kept my interest and I didn't want to stop listening.
Couldn't wait to get back to it each time. It had so many twists and turns! The narrator did an excellent job.
I wish it had a sequel because he left the door wide open for one. If any of you saw that show The Following, it kind of reminded me of that. On to my next Mark Edwards book!
