Summary

Fashionable society regards Sir Benjamin Wright with the utmost honour and respect. Yet Lady Emma knows that her husband is, in fact, a drunken, jealous brute who delights in humiliating her both in and out of the bedroom.

So, his unexpected murder is a blessing, she thinks - that is, until the constable's accusing finger points to her as the murderer. But it soon becomes apparent that her late husband hid many secrets and enemies.

When the practical Comte Saint-Juste arrives on the scene offering his services, Lady Emma is about to discover what the French dedication to l'amour really means....

Lovely story charmingly written

Lovely period romance slightly in the style of Georgette Hayer but more accessibly written in terms of a modern audience’s attention span!

Not the author's usual standard

Easy to listen to, but content very disappointing. OK if you like traditional love stories rather than an actual detective novel

I really enjoyed this book

I liked the strong character of the main lady in this book. The book is very well written and narrated. Will look for more.

Delicious

This book was for me another side of this delightful author. I have long been a fan of Agatha Raisin so was happy to find this historical read.

Very enjoyable

The narrator's performance transforms a good story into a really good one. Definitely a keeper.

Good fun.

This story is a warts and all look at Reency England rolled up in a light and enjoyable romance.

Bad era to be a woman

I am a huge fan of the Agatha Raisin books and so decided to try this one. Glad I didn’t live in Regency England, where a woman was often reduced to being no more than a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder, and then subject to her husband’s‘peculiarities’. The two main characters were very likeable, though
