Summary

*WINNER OF THE BOLLINGER EVERYMAN WODEHOUSE PRIZE FOR COMIC FICTION 2023*

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘Funny, clever and sweet’– Sunday Times

‘The much loved comic proves adept at noirish fiction in a debut whose surrealist humour sets it apart’ – Observer

My name is Gary. I’m a thirty-year-old legal assistant with a firm of solicitors in London. To describe me as anonymous would be unfair but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity. I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice.

Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan. When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers.

And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life…

A thrilling story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny smash hit first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer.

Sorry Bob!

The first mistake was attempting to narrate your own story! I’m afraid Bob Mortimer is a lovely person but it was a drastic mistake to try to do this! You need to have someone who can do this professionally. I found it rather cringeworthy trying to listen to, what potentially is a great story, read in such an awkward and stilted way. It really spoiled my enjoyment and I could have turned off there and then. However I’m giving it a go a bit longer! But please Bob don’t try to do this again!!!

Awful Narration

I know he wrote it but please get another narrator to read this book! Bob Mortimer knows his book so well that his reading is just a fast drone. Yes, he does the voices but all in a dull drone. But more importantly, he is so nasal and the sniff/snort/hawk at the end of each long sentence made me feel nauseous. Surely, he could be taught to read without this nasty gasp of air at the end. It was a relief to hear Sally Phillips narrate some of the chapters, but in the middle she made a mistake, said “bollocks” and then reread that sentence. That was quite startling. I have now purchased the book, as it seems a fun read, and hopefully Bob’s sniffy hawks have left my brain and memory so I can properly enjoy it.

Not what I expected !!!

This is a crime thriller !! And then Bob has got into it and added his genius mind . It is full of re spawned characters from Athletico Mince and some new ones . Bob as has not disappointed……” he looked at me as if I were an advert for a donkey sanctuary “ This is probably better on audio as you have the joy of Bob and Sally reading the story . 10/10

Refund please?

I couldn't listen to this. The narration was poor , so stopped listening after chapter 1. It stopped me from engaging with the character or storyline. Really disappointed.

Terrible recording

This book is brilliant but the audit book has been poorly edited and desperately requires review, there are a number of bloopers in the final “edit” and this detracts from the book

Not an audio book, a Bob Mortimer play, amazing.

I read a review of the book and the reviewer mentioned imagining Bob Mortimers voice in character while reading, no need to imagine, here it is, so much more than an audio book, loved the characters, the voices, especially the squirrel, sad i have finished it, might have to give it another go in a few weeks.

Seven hours of Perfection

Just to note that the audio on this was slightly echo affected at the beginning, but this went after a few minutes and did not come back. So if you find this at the beginning, fear not.

This has immediately become one of my very favourite books. It was just wonderful to listen to. Bob Mortimer tells one of his wonderfully zany stories without going too far into the surreal. A gripping yarn which I adored from start to finish

It’s perfect Bob!!

If you love Bob and his sense of humour then you’ll love this. Had to get the audio version so I could hear it in his voice and it didn’t disappoint. Lots of laugh out loud, spit my coffee out moments. Love it.

A good, fun listen.

A surprisingly good and addictive story. Voices from Bob instantly recognisable from the Athletico Mince podcasts. Initially had problems with the prominent deep breaths from Sally but this was all forgiven when I heard her swearing after making a reading error. This was either missed or left in on purpose but certainly made me smile.

Great descriptions of characters but I personally couldn't picture anyone other than Bob - not a bad thing. Recommended.

Fantastic read!

Not the best crime thriller ever written, but who really cares? A great mix of drama, loveable characters and laughs. Hopefully we’ll get more books from Mr Mortimer.

Cleverly written fun

Bob Mortimer's clever humour and sharp wit shine through this hoot of a story; even more enjoyable to listen to him narrating

Great Mortimer, mediocre story

Bob Mortimer’s figures of speech and descriptions are very funny. The story is predictable and repetitive. Maybe for a long, long car ride.

It's like listening to Bob spin yarns over a pint.

This book was pretty good. I preferred his "...And Away" incredibly. And I loved his fishing tome, too. This was a great murder mystery/love story/only-Bob-Mortimer's-mind-could-think-of-this tale. While slow in spots, it was breezy, varyingly intense and light. The love story was a great angle...well, more of an infatuation storyline...
I can't really write more without given so much away...so many of the surprises that made it such a great listen.
So, I'll say this: Take this for dog walks and long drives. It'll make the time disappear.

A classic Mortimerian tale

If you love the oddball wit of Bob Mortimer, this book will not disappoint. Bob and Sally deliver an excellent performance and I for one hope this new chapter in Bob’s career continues!

Bob Mortimer at His Best

First novels are a glimpse into a writer's truest form. This was that and more. Gary is a protagonist that feels like a real person living a real life that is caught up in extraordinary circumstances. It felt like a friend reading you his newest idea for a novel while you laugh and love it more because the telling is so good.

A great first novel!

I feel like I’ve just had a quick glimpse of what it must be like inside the mind of Bob Mortimer, and boy how truly wonderful it is in there! I can’t say I thought I’d be listening to a talking squirrel when I started this book, but that’s Bob in a nutshell. (Pun intended) I truly hope we hear more from Gary,Grace and and Satsuma.
