Summary

A woman on the run. A crew of Viking mercenaries. A forbidden romance. And the secret that threatens them all.

Silla Nordvig is running for her life.

The Queen of Íseldur has sent warriors to bring Silla to Sunnavík, where death awaits her. When her father is killed, his last words set Silla on a perilous quest: travel the treacherous Road of Bones—a thousand-mile stretch haunted by warbands, creatures of darkness, and a mysterious murderer—and go to Kopa, where a shield house awaits her.

After barely surviving the first stretch of road, a desperate Silla sneaks into a supply wagon belonging to the notorious Bloodaxe Crew. To make it to Kopa, she must win over Axe Eyes, the brooding leader of the Crew, while avoiding the Wolf, his distractingly handsome right-hand man. But the queen's ruthless assassin has other plans and hunts Silla obsessively.

Will Silla make it safely to Kopa? Or will she fall prey to the perils of the Road of Bones?

Featuring an immersive world blending fairy tales with Vikings, The Road of Bones leads you on an adrenaline-fueled chase with fun banter and a slow-building enemies-to-lovers romance. It is book one in the Ashen Series.

Further icing on an already perfect cake

Having read the book ( which has become one of my top 5 favourite reads of all time) I thought I’d listen to the audiobook and found myself immersed again in a different kind of perfection. Being read to rather than reading myself felt it allowed a deep immersion due to the wonderful emotional narration and active reading of the narrator. It brought to life the complex relationships, the exquisitely rendered characters and the thrilling storyline, the gorgeous intimacy and the evocative settings—each part perfectly executed to harmonise into a superlative book. Demi Winters is extraordinary!

Waaaay better than ACOTAR

So glad I heard about this book just in time for the second one to come out!! It’s really really good, feels new but also has everything I’ve enjoyed from other fantasy romances

So good

I found this really enjoyable, not something I'd usually read, but I'm really looking forward to the next book.

Adored! 5 star romantasy

Loved this so much! A bit confusing at first as the audio didn't make any distinction when changing POVs so might have been better to read it physically but I loved the characters and storyline and once I got to know the characters the changing POV was fine on audio! The magic is super intriguing! LOVE that she's a baker not a fighter! Can't wait for the next book!! So excited it will be released on audible next month!!

SUCH a good listen!

This is the first Viking romance/fantasy book I’ve listened/read and it did not disappoint!

The character development was strong, I liked the fact that side characters had their own stories rather than just added for ‘bulk’. The main sorry wasn’t overall predictable, although the MFC does seem to have a lot of ‘luck’.

I feel like the story has enabled a strong foundation for the next book which I can’t to read!

DNF - So boring..

"I know people love this book, which is why I picked it up, but there wasn’t a single exciting moment in it for me. I stopped reading around 75%, and I’ve heard the last part picks up, but honestly, I just didn’t care enough to keep going. You’d think the slow pacing would give room to bond with the characters and allow for development, but for me, it was just too slow. I didn’t connect with most of the characters—not the main love interest, not the 'true' love interest (yes, it’s obvious), and definitely not with what actually happened, which mostly seemed to be… traveling, blood, more blood, killing, cooking, stabbing.

I get that the multiple POVs are supposed to help us get to know different characters better, but honestly, it just felt like filler. Maybe if the series is completed, there will be some big ‘ohhh’ moments that justify this painfully long journey of nothing. But I won’t be sticking around to find out.

One thing I do appreciate is that none of the characters are ridiculously overpowered without limits. But instead… everything is solved by cooking?"

It got better as it went on…

Mixed feelings on this book! The first half I found a bit of a slog & nearly DNF but I perceived due to the good reviews. The second half was more enjoyable & it has definitely left me intrigued for the next book. The pace is a lot slower then I’m used too reading & the relationships took an age to develop even then I didn’t love any of the characters much! But overall it’s interesting & hopefully opened the story up to reveal more in the next book. I did like the different take on substance abuse & grief but I found the majority of the book just feel dark & depressing there wasn’t many warm & fuzzy moments! Maybe that’s the point but I’m hoping for some happier times in the second book..
