Summary

Olivia has settled on the tiny Greek island of Halemni; she is married to a Greek man and is mother of two small sons. As the turquoise of summer dissolves into the cool of autumn, so the rhythm of island life goes on unchanged, until an earthquake ravages the Turkish coast, sending a tidal wave to envelop the island. Its force devastates Halemni, tearing apart the fabric of the small community. In the aftermath, a stranger appears. Kitty, an Englishwoman, is alone and without possessions. She accepts Olivia's offer of refuge in the potter's house, but she guards her past as preciously as Olivia protects her young family.

Critic reviews

"[Rula Lenska] is superb....Rosie Thomas has written a humane story, and Lenska takes the story to new heights with her magnificent application of Greek dialect, understanding of human emotions, and love of these characters." (AudioFile)

Too long

An interesting idea but so long and repetitive and the final chapter didn’t actually cover what happened to poor Kitty in the end ....

Rosie Thomas

Excellent narrator. There was a need to finish no matter what happened in the story

A fantastic, mesmerising tale set on a sleepy Greek island

Unforgettable and unique story that leaves the reader/listener with much after reflection. A wonderful book, faultlessly written, a very talented author. One of the best books read. Rula Lenska narrated this as if it were her own with the right feeling and tone and a perfect Greek accent. The sort of story and narration that had you intrigued until the end and then longing for more, at a loss at the finish! Definitely worth a second time round. Recommended !

unable to synopsis

I have absolutely no idea what went on in this book.
Nothing interested me or kept my attention.
I kept with it as thought "It must get better" & by the time I was half way through it thought "I may as well finish it now".
Narrated was ok, but not good enough to give me an interest in what she was narrating.
Wish I'd given up at first chapter & moved onto another book.
Won't be recommending this to anyone, although I'm sure there must be people out there who have enjoyed it, but definitely not for me.
