don't buy!!!

I am so disappointed as I have listened to all the other books in this series and loved them. I lasted thorough the first three chapters but had to give up before tearing my hair out. The story is soooooo boring. Shame on the author.

Entertaining but far fetched - great narration

I love "whodunnit" books and this one does not disappoint for interesting characters and an intriguing plot. I did find some of the more far fetched elements a little disappointing (without spoiling anything; the police do not, to my mind, regularly embrace a member of the public into their inner circle with such utter indiscretion - and said characters efforts to solve the crime with suggestions that had not occurred to the detectives themselves was slightly annoying and reminiscent of "Miss Marple"! ) Nevertheless, the remaining storyline was very well written and engaging enough for me to stick with it. I was slightly anxious about a new narrator for this series of books but Cathleen McCarron does an absolutely sterling job.

Don’t skip this one!

I’ve been following the Anderson and Costello series and noticed that this was narrated by a different voice actor. I skipped it as it winds me up when they swap narrators half way through. I went onto Tears of Angels. The main character in this book appears in’Tears’. I was so confused as I hadn’t listened to this. I ended up skipping back and was glad I did. It’s an odd but good book. Think I’m going to have to restart ‘Tears’! I had to speed up the narrator to 1.1 as it was a tad slow.

great story

enjoyed the plot but preferred the other books in this series told from the detectives point of view. Found this a little tedious at times.

Better than I expected

I missed this book out of the Anderson & Costello series.. I wasn't keen on this narrator at all, and wasn't sure I wanted to read an Anderson & Costello book that was primarily about another character. I'm glad I went back to it, after getting through all of the series, I enjoyed reading about Elvie's perspective, her personality, and the back story of Elvie & the "dissapearance" of her sister Sophie. It would have been much more enjoyable (for me) if the brilliant James Macpherson had been the narrator.

Disappointing

Don’t often have an unfinished book in my library.
I found the narration was partly to blame but the “first person” style that swapped to “third person” caused me to loose the thread and interest. I will be avoiding this author in the future.

What a disappointment

I didn't have a problem with the different presentation, that is, the first person point of view of a new character.
I DID have a problem with: The awful characters, and disfunctional families and relationships. The private detective who is forever wiping snot on the back of his sleeve, or coughing up phlegm and spitting. Various upstanding members of society who beat their wives up and rule with rods of iron. Also the self depreciation of the main character, Elvie, the number of times she mentioned her acne, her facial hair and how ugly she was drove me insane. And finally, The very strange idea that murder detectives will discuss the details of their investigations with members of the public, and defer to their opinions and actions, and be beaten by their investigative powers.
The second star is because I did actually want to understand what had happened, even though I was thoroughly cheesed off with the characters. I didn't enjoy this book, I wasn't impressed by the weak narration and hated the characters.
