Story
The brutal murder of 10-year-old Callum Bradley sent shockwaves across Scotland, but as the weeks have stretched on with no solid leads, the investigation has been scaled back. Sergeant Don Colyear, community police officer, is tasked with tying up a loose end: a 999 call which may have hinted at the boy's murder. However, the call was made three weeks before the crime took place. The caller turns out to be a resident at an Edinburgh care home, drifting in and out of lucidity due to dementia - enough to write off the potential lead as a dead end.

A brilliant listen
I am really pleased to have discovered Caro Ramsay. These are gripping, complex novels, where the main plot lines are carefully woven and developed and the sub stories, through the lives and characters of the squad that develop and conflict are all brilliantly dramatised. These details of a life always support, never detract from, the work of the novel, which is to desperately unravel and end the case. Short on food and sleep, the whole department, even the stray dog, move the plot onward, sometimes with the syncopation of great team work, sometimes despite themselves, and each other. I am, of course, downloading the next in the series right now!

Good storyline
Really enjoyed this. Narration was brilliant. One or two characters are a bit weak, didn't take much notice of those, in my opinion, completely unnecessary.

A 'Proper' Police Procedural
Caro Ramsay is such a good writer and this is what I would call a 'proper' police procedural. As the story progressed I felt like I was a fly on the wall of the investigation and party to every decision that the police made while investigating a complex case involving rape and murder. The book is set in Glasgowduring a foggy spell which adds to the dark themes of the book.
I usually increase the speed when I listen to audiobooks but this one was quite complicated and I listened at normal speed so that I could concentrate better on what was happening. I love the characters of Anderson and Costello because they feel very real and I like the way they have developed with each new book.
I did guess who Mr Click was about halfway through the book, but I certainly didn't guess the 'why' which came as a huge shock at the end!
James Macpherson's narration was spot on and enhanced my enjoyment of the book.

Thank goodness it's J MacPhearson narratinh
I really love Caro Ramsey's books. This series is dark, complex, layered and gritty. It's got everything and I was so excited about getting stuck into the 12 books but then......the narrator changed. What???? Why???? Nothing against them but it's just the change to a female narrator is jarring. Be fine if they started as such. I had to return the previous Night Hunter. Now I see there's only one more narrated by James. Ugh. I will only purchase that one sadly. The rest...if only.

Thoroughly recommend this book. it has everything in it you could wish for. Exciting until the last page. I thought I had guessed the plot several times only to be wrong.
