Summary

When quiet Ellen Lang enters Elvis Cole's Disney-deco office, she's lost something very valuable - her husband and young son. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn't thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike.

Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood's studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it's also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.

Bad narrator

What a horrible narrator. Spoiled the book completely. The book reviews were good I didn’t listen to sample before buying the book.

Poor quality recording

Liked the story once the I got used to the narrators horrible voice. Sound quality in general is like I recorded a vinyl edition of the book onto a worn out cassette. Dreadful sound.

Awful narration

This is one of my favourite ever novels. I am an avid fan of the whole series. The narrator is awful. Too much 'he said. She said'. I lasted 10 minutes.
Buy the book people, don't have it spoiled for you.

good story but a little dated.

I am new to the author Robert Crais, although he has been writing for years. after reading a recent book I decided to go back to the first in the series. This is a good story but a little dated, hence 4 stars.

Good book.

Not quite the same feel as some of crais books. Still a good listen though, interesting story. Not hugely keen on the narrator.

Gave up before the end of chapter one

I bought this because I'd enjoyed Crais' "Suspect". This book is much earlier. I found the writing slow and clichéd and the narration uninspired.. I tried hard to make it to the end of the first chapter but my interest and patience were snuffed out long before then

Good Story, Terrible Quality

Reads like a good old-fashioned 80s action flick, but the audio quality is absolutely terrible.

Spoiled by dreadful narration

I’ve read and listened to many of the Cole/Pike books and have enjoyed them but this audio version was ruined for me by the narration. The narrator had limited range and I thought the voices didn’t suit the characters. Worst of all, he made every word SOUND! LIKE! IT! HAD! AN! EXCLAMATION! MARK! I had to stop listening after 30mins… the first time I’ve ever given up on an audiobook.
I rated the story bcos having previously read the book I remember it being ok.

Great story, shame about the narrator

I love the Cole & Pike stories by Robert Crais and would highly recommend the books.

However, this audible version is totally ruined for me by the choice of narrator. He has a very old grizzled sounding voice and just doesn’t match the mid-30s aged characters or give the story the right atmosphere.

I know these things are subjective - but the moral of this is to always sample before you buy!

I couldn’t listen anymore after 30 minutes so wasted a credit.

Interesting

The plot line was good and enjoyed the characters, the narration seemed to lack a certain something though
