It is chronologically the earliest case in Sherlock Holmes canon. This story is related mainly by Holmes rather than Watson, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his powers of deduction, having treated it as a mere hobby until this time. This is one of the two Sherlock Holmes stories in which a protagonist is haunted by an old acquaintance for an old crime. The other is "The Boscombe Valley Mystery".

Silver Blaze, one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 in the cycle collected as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle ranked Silver Blaze 13th in a list of his 19 favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson travel by train to Dartmoor to investigate a crime of disappearance of the great race horse Silver Blaze and the murder of the horse's trainer, John Straker. Holmes and Watson arrive at King's Pyland, from which Silver Blaze is missing.

The Yellow Face, one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the third tale from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in Strand Magazine in 1893 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget. Sherlock Holmes, suffering from boredom due to a want of cases, returns home from a walk with Dr. Watson early in spring to find he has missed a visitor but that the caller has left his pipe behind.

The Musgrave Ritual is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The story was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1919, and was collected later in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Unlike the majority of Holmes stories, the main narrator is not Doctor Watson, but Sherlock Holmes himself. With Watson providing an introduction, the story within a story is a classic example of a frame tale. It is one of the earliest recorded cases investigated by Holmes, and establishes his problem solving skills.

The Stockbroker's Clerk is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is the fourth of the twelve collected in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in most British editions of the canon, and third of eleven in most American ones (owing to the omission of the "scandalous" "Adventure of the Cardboard Box"). The story was first published in Strand Magazine in March 1893 and featured seven illustrations by Sidney Paget. A young clerk, Hall Pycroft, consults Holmes with his suspicions concerning a company that has offered him a very well-paid job.

Helen Stoner worries her stepfather may be trying to kill her after he contrives to move her to the bedroom where her sister had died two years earlier, shortly before her wedding. Stoner is herself now engaged, and Holmes learns that her stepfather's annuity (from the estate of his wife — Stoner's mother) would be greatly reduced if either sister married. During a late-night investigation of the bedroom, Holmes and Watson discover a dummy bell-pull near a ventilator. As they lie in wait a whistle sounds, then a snake appears through the ventilator.

A banker asks Holmes to investigate after a "Beryl Coronet" entrusted to him is damaged at his home. Awakened by noise, he had found his son, Arthur, holding the damaged coronet. Arthur refuses to speak, neither admitting guilt nor explaining himself. Footprints in the snow outside the house tell Holmes that the banker's niece had conspired with a blackguard to steal the coronet; Arthur had discovered the crime in progress and the coronet had been damaged during his struggle to prevent it being stolen. He had refused to tell his father the truth of the crime because of his love for his cousin.

Lord Robert St. Simon's new American bride, Hatty Doran, has disappeared almost immediately after the wedding. The servants had prevented an old love interest of his from forcing her way into the wedding breakfast, Hatty had been seen in whispered conversation with her maid, and Inspector Lestrade arrives with the news that Hatty's wedding dress and ring have been found floating in the Serpentine. Holmes quickly solves the mystery, locating Hatty at a hotel with a mysterious, "common-looking" man who had picked up her dropped bouquet after the ceremony.

FViolet Hunter consults Holmes after being offered a governess job subject to a number of unusual conditions, including cutting her hair short. The wage is extremely high, £120, and she decides to accept the job, though Holmes tells her to contact him if she needs to. After a number of strange occurrences, including the discovery of a sealed-off wing of the house, she does so. Holmes discovers that someone had been kept prisoner in the wing, but when Holmes, Watson and Hunter enter, it is empty.

An engineer, Victor Hatherley, attends Dr Watson's surgery after his thumb is chopped off, and recounts his tale to Watson and Holmes. Hatherley had been hired for 50 guineas to repair a machine he was told compressed Fuller's earth into bricks. Hatherley was told to keep the job confidential, and was transported to the job in a carriage with frosted glass, to keep the location secret. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "crust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing earth.

Da ihm Zeugenaussagen zufolge sein 18-jähriger Sohn James mit einer Waffe folgte und es kurz vor der Tat zu einem lautstarken Streit zwischen den beiden kam, scheint die Angelegenheit klar zu sein, zumal die tödlichen Verletzungen durch den Griff der genannten Waffe herbeigeführt worden sein dürften.

Die fünf Orangenkerne (The Five Orange Pips) erschien erstmals im November 1891 im Strand Magazine und wurde ein Jahr später mit 11 anderen Fällen in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Handlungszeitpunkt: September 1887: Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson werden von dem jungen John Openshaw um Hilfe gebeten, der einen Brief erhielt, in dem sich fünf getrocknete Orangenkerne befanden.

Die Blutbuchen (The Copper Beeches) erschien erstmals im Juni 1892 im Strand Magazine. Noch im selben Jahr wurde der Fall in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Handlungszeitpunkt: Vorfrühling 1890: Der arbeitslosen Miss Violet Hunter wird ein verlockendes und gleichzeitig seltsamens Arbeitsangebot gemacht: Für 120 Pfund im Jahr soll sie als Gouvernante auf das Anwesen The Copper Beeches (Die Blutbuchen) ziehen, allerdings ihr üppiges, kastanienbraunes Haar kurz und, wenn man es von ihr verlangt, ein spezielles Kleid tragen.

Die Beryll-Krone (The Beryl Coronet) erschien erstmals im Mai 1892 im Strand Magazine, Im Oktober desselben Jahres wurde der Fall in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht, Handlungszeitpunkt.

Das gesprenkelte Band (Original: The Adventure of the Speckled Band) ist eine Sherlock-Holmes-Kurzgeschichte von Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, die erstmals im Februar 1892 im Strand Magazine erschien und von Sidney Paget illustriert wurde. Die Geschichte wurde im Oktober 1892 mit elf anderen Geschichten in den Sammelband The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (dt. Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes) aufgenommen und im August 1905 erneut unter dem Titel The Spotted Band in der New York World veröffentlicht.

Der adelige Junggeselle (The Noble Bachelor) erschien erstmals im April 1892 im Strand Magazine. Noch im selben Jahr wurde der Fall in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Handlungszeitpunkt: Oktober 1886: Lord Robert St Simon, der zweite Sohn des Herzogs von Balmoral, sagt sich brieflich für den Nachmittag bei Holmes und Watson an. Aus den Zeitungen rekapitulieren sie, dass sich der 41jährige am Vortag mit Hatty Doran, der einzigen Tochter eines US-Millionärs aus San Francisco, verheiraten wollte.

In Dr. Watsons Praxis erscheint sehr früh am Morgen der knapp 25jährige Hydraulik-Ingenieur Victor Hatherley, der in der Nacht einen Daumen verloren hat. Da er von einem Mordanschlag spricht, schaltet Watson umgehend Holmes ein. Ihm berichtet Hatherley, dass ihn gestern in seinem miserabel laufenden Laden ein ungewöhnlich dünner Mann mit deutschem Akzent aufgesucht hat, der sich als Oberst Lysander Stark ausgab.

Der Mann mit der entstellten Lippe (The Man with the Twisted Lip) erschien erstmals im Dezember 1891 im Strand Magazine und wurde ein Jahr später mit 11 anderen Fällen in Die Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes veröffentlicht. Handlungszeitpunkt Juni 1889: Im Londoner Hafenviertel verschwindet der angesehene Gentleman Neville St. Clair spurlos. Alle Beweise sprechen für Mord und der einzige Verdächtige ist ein Bettler mit grausam entstellter Lippe.

"La Aventura de un Escándalo en Bohemia" es un cuento clásico de Sherlock Holmes. Gira en torno al intrigante caso del escandaloso pasado del rey de Bohemia y su búsqueda de una fotografía comprometedora, que pone a prueba la destreza investigadora de Holmes.
