About this listen

Falling for the girl next door...
Mercenary Mason Lang never intended to go into this line of work, but with pay this good, he can’t turn it down. The only challenge is getting out with all of his limbs still intact, which is a lot harder than he realized. And when he does, Mason is going to have it all - including the shy and sweet girl next door.
Laila James knew her crush on the gorgeous next-door neighbor was hopeless. And following a humiliating incident, she’d rather just forget him completely. However, when Mason comes back to town and tries to claim her for his own, Laila keeps her resolve. After all, she’s moved on and is even dating someone else.
But Mason isn’t giving up so easily. His instincts go into overdrive as he suspects that the rich, frat boy who latched onto Laila is trouble. Determined to prove that they’re meant for each other, the mercenary has a new mission. Missing his chance the first time around, Mason refuses to lose the only woman he's ever really wanted. Can he make the girl next door fall for him again?

good book boyfriend
Mason is a great book boyfriend. I love that he isn't a player and I love that he doesn't play around even when they had their issues. I like that Laila is shy and reserved but still maintains her self-esteem. their friends, Ransom and Rosie, and the others, push the story along. They add value to the overall storyline. The suspense is unexpected in places and quite well crafted and interesting.

The hottie next door...
This starts of almost like you would expect. Two neighbours attracted to each other circling around each other unable to take the next step until finally their stars align and they manage to get together. Then things go pear-shaped, also as expected. Mason Lang ends up hurt on a mission and, due to a misunderstanding, Laila moves on and moves out.
Months later, when there is a chance to repair the damage, it appears to be too late. Laila is with someone else and Mason, obviously, doesn't like him. Both of them move on with their lives until Mason catches Laila's boyfriend behaving in a way that Mason doesn't like. The story sort of escalates from this point and includes plenty of intrigue as well. It is overall enjoyable and satisfying when the HEA is achieved.
This audiobook was very easy to listen to. Overall, it was enjoyable.

Not so simple boy next door story
Mercenary Mason liked his shy neighbour Laila, but he never really noticed how attractive she was until he literally has a run in with her, on his return back home from a mission. Laila however, has had a massive crush on him since she first laid eyes on him. They get to know each other intimately one night, but then there is a big misunderstanding which leads Laila into another man's arms. But when Mason finds out just how dangerous her new boo is, he goes straight into protection mode and is determined to win her back.
A good, sweet story, but certain aspects of it were quite unrealistic. It had a lot more plot and depth to it than the usual romance drama's which are often puked out in short stories.

It's Good
Miscommunications and forced absences are my least favorite tropes in fiction (hello, don't we own countless devices with which we can communicate at even very long distances if something is THAT important to us?), BUT, Lucy Leroux has managed to still make me love this story despite using those plot tired devices because there's a LOT more going on in this story than just that. I loved how Laila took care of herself and stood up for herself, but also loved Mason's stubbornness and his willingness to stand back when necessary. Overall this is a well-paced, well-written story which I did greatly enjoy and do recommend.

Mason & Laila
Mason and Laila’s story is sweet and full of promise. There’s action and mystery.
Really enjoyed Addison Barnes as a narrator and hope to listen to another of her narrations very soon.
