Absolutely Brilliant
- By Shell Barrett on 27-03-22
Summary
The queen of feel-good fiction!
The brand-new novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Perfectly Imperfect Woman - a gorgeous listen full of love, life and laughter.
Sophie Mayhew looks like she has the perfect life. Wife of rising political star John F Mayhew, a man who is one step away from the top job in the government, her glamour matches his looks, power, breeding and money. But John has made some stupid mistakes along the way, some of which are threatening to emerge. Still, all this can still be swept under the carpet as long as Sophie 'the trophy' plays her part in front of the cameras.
But the words that come out of Sophie’s mouth one morning on the doorstep of their country house are not the words the spin doctors put in there. Bursting out of the restrictive mould she has been in since birth, Sophie flees to a place that was special to her as a child, a small village on the coast where she intends to be alone.
But once there, she finds she becomes part of a community that warms her soul and makes her feel as if she is breathing properly for the first time. Sophie knows she won't be left in peace for long. Now she must decide: where does her real future lie?

Absolutely fabulous
As a long time fan of Milly Johnson and having all of her books, I felt the last two were enjoyable but not spectacular as some of her other. This one though is magnificent and shows Milly is on top of her game and I would say her best book to date.
The main story is intertwined with vignettes of characters who you believe in , taking you on a fabulous journey. As well as being her best book to date, I would say this is one of the best books I have read for years

Definitely magnificent!!
I bought this book to listen to whilst working and I probably should’ve listened in spare time as I quite often stopped what I was doing to pay close attention! I don’t want to ruin the storyline for others so I’ll be broad.
The characters in this book are so relatable (well, thankfully with the exception of the two families and you’ll know which ones I mean when you read It) you’ll warm to them and experience things feeling like they are your friends.
Sophie is a really lovely character and I willed her through situations and out of others.
It’s a really lovely book that warms your heart, makes you sad, mad and happy over and over again. I’ll admit there were a few outbursts of “noooo!!” From me and triumphant smiles at other times.
I’d highly recommend this book to anyone looking to escape the daily grind to cosy up in an Alms house up North.

Could have been great, but descended into cliche!
The early chapters are really good and gave such promise. Sadly, after that it descended into a variety of cliches. Also, just as another book I listened to by this author, there is a lot of body shaming, people being fat (and therefore unpleasant, scheming and/or bitchy) or too thin (no noticeable character flaws). I had to keep fast forwarding several chapters and ultimately it will be returned.
The narration is excellent.

I enjoyed this audio book
The antagonists were a bit “one note” and a little too easy to hate, and the story was predictable, but I really did like it in spite of these shortcomings. I’m also a sucker for British narration. I was looking for something light and entertaining, and this did not disappoint.
