Upon the cliffs of a remote Scottish island, Lòn Haven, stands a lighthouse.
A lighthouse that has weathered more than storms.
Mysterious and terrible events have happened on this island. It started with a witch hunt. Now, centuries later, islanders are vanishing without explanation.
Coincidence? Or curse?
Liv Stay flees to the island with her three daughters, in search of a home. She doesn’t believe in witches, or dark omens, or hauntings. But within months, her daughter Luna will be the only one of them left.
Twenty years later, Luna is drawn back to the place her family vanished. As the last sister left, it’s up to her to find out the truth . . .
But what really happened at the lighthouse all those years ago?
Critic reviews
‘Right from the start, I was hooked on this eerie, cryptic novel’ Samantha Downing
‘This book is SO good! … Multiple narrators and time frames, family dynamics, siblings, witches; eerie but not scary. I mean, what is there not to love? This is C.J. Cooke’s best yet! A fascinating and enthralling read’ Nina Pottell, Prima
'A gripping modern gothic thriller that is also a haunting depiction of witch trials, it is a wonderfully atmospheric and compelling novel’ Rosamund Lupton
‘This ghost story is a perfect mix of propulsive plot and shivers-up-the-spine spookiness’ Good Housekeeping
‘An intricate story about women and witch trials but with a delightful timeslip element that really works. It’s a compelling story and very satisfying how the threads are woven together’ Kate Sawyer
‘With characters that feel like they live and breathe, an atmospheric setting and a plot that kept me guessing, all delivered in luminous prose, this is a flawless read. Underpinned by a story of the Scottish witch hunts, the themes remain starkly relevant today’ Elizabeth Lee
‘Seething with gothic menace … interweaves myth, superstition and history in a way which feels strikingly relevant and gripping’ Caroline Lea
‘Wonderful writing with a beautifully haunting tone. Gothic at its best’ Rhiannon Ward
‘Beautifully crafted’ Constance Sayers

Nice Structure But Inconsistencies Annoying
I struggled to finish this story because early in the plot there were some unlikely scenarios that unfolded which I found hard to swallow. However, I'm not an avid reader of fiction so may be my inability to suspend belief is at issue. So I gave it a four anyway because outwith the issues I have it's well crafted and nicely narrated.

Nice folklore tale
Enjoyed this story but it fizzled out at the end for me which was a shame. Almost like the word count was done, let's wrap it.

Beautiful, eerie, captivating - I LOVED IT!
It was a mesmerising read (Well technically a listen) loved the narration according to the different timelines, the soothing voices of the narrators, the story itself is original and very fascinating. I loved how it well incorporated the tragic story of the witch trials, condemning the cruelty of the people who acted in atrocious way blinded by ignorance and dogmas. I very much recommend this book and I can't wait to check out what else the author has written!!

Fabulous!
I loved this book! Was drawn to it in a book shop in Bath so glad I remembered to listen. The telling of the story through the different characters and times is a brilliant way for the story to unfold. Worrying and mystical all at the same time.

Wonderful story
It’s well written and the narrator enhances the story. It can be a bit of a challenge to follow when it jumps from different times but stick with it.

The Lighthouse Witches
This was a good story although I feel the format switching the time period made so regularly it a little difficult to follow the various characters and their family interactions with a constantly ages of the various characters, I don’t want to spoil the story so can’t really go into detail, but I believe the time frames required greater depth and fewer switches.

very enjoyable!1
when i think of gothic literature i, like most, think of haunted victorian manors or dwindling aristoracy with dark secrets. This story however managed to perfectly take the growing unease and horror of the gothic and transplant it into the 2020s. the story is the kind i was hoping the magic toy shop would be, way back when. An excellent read/listen for fans of the genre and i hope to find more from the author in the future.
