Summary
Thirteen-year-old Johnny Merrimon has to face things no boy his age should face. In the year since his twin sister's abduction his world has fallen apart: his father has disappeared, and his fragile mother is spiralling into ever deeper despair. Johnny keeps strong. Armed with a map, a bike and a flashlight, he stalks the bad men of Raven County. The police might have given up on Alyssa; he never will. Someone, somewhere, knows something they're not telling.
Only one person looks out for Johnny. Detective Clyde Hunt shares his obsession with the case. But when Johnny witnesses a hit-and-run and insists the victim was killed because he'd found Alyssa, even Hunt thinks he's lost it. And then another young girl goes missing....

A thriller and a literary novel in one
Best book I've read in ages. So evocative of rural usa and character portrayals are interesting and feel so real. Having said this is a thriller and a page turner but feels like a literary novel as well and has some of the feel of to kill a mocking bird about it

Last Child great read
Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Child to be better than the print version?
Not read printe version only heard audio version, but great whilst travelling as can still look out window and take in the scenery
What other book might you compare The Last Child to, and why?
All John harts books are well written. You get involved with the characters, can really picture where they are as the descriptions are good
What about John Chancer’s performance did you like?
Great narrator, clear, amusing, interesting to listen too. Would listen to other books narrated by him.

Mystic River in the sticks
Any additional comments?
It's the toughest of subject matters - a child goes missing, the family falls apart because of guilt, grief, lack of closure and the faintest glimmer of hope. A year after his sister's abduction, Johnny hasn't given up on finding her and bringing her home, unlike everyone else. He ditches school to mark off various scummy characters from his list of possible suspects. A local cop who led the investigation is similarly obsessed with the case, but is trying to balance looking out for Johnny and his mum with his job and his own family and only just clinging on. The Last Child feels like a small town mix of Mystic River and the movie Prisoners. Hart writes a wonderful story that is much more than a solid mystery, it explores obsession and how tragedy and grief destroys all in its path. This was my first John Hart book, but I've got Redemption Road on the list for the not too distant future. Fingers crossed it'll be as cracking as this one was!
John Chancer is good too. He narrated my favourite audiobook, The Grapes of Wrath, and he seems to be a great choice. Nothing flashy, gets the job done.

My favourite book
Marvellous book, it got my attention from the first page. The narrator is wonderful too, and makes the whole listening process a joy. This is a book I've listened to a few times, and I've never been let down.
