Summary

Mid-winter, St. Andrews, Scotland: When a university lecturer fails to turn up for class, he is found dead at home, with evidence of having committed suicide. A female student reports to the police that she was having an affair with him and knows he would never commit suicide. Toxicology results turn up Class A drugs in his system, and DCI Andy Gilchrist and his associate, DS Jessie Janes, are called in to investigate.

The initial enquiry soon turns into a murder investigation, and when Gilchrist and Jessie dig deep into the man's background they uncover a criminal past, a history of romance scams, and several bank accounts containing hundreds of thousands of pounds. A forensic search of the man's computer hard-drives reveal a lengthy trail of heartbroken women tricked into parting with their savings in a futile search for love.

Did one of those scorned women seek revenge and kill him? Or did his criminal past finally catch up with him?

Good story

Murders around romance scams come to the attention of Gilchrist and his team. It appears as they think they have a suspect another murder is committed. Good story

Towser T

I like the pace, the narration, the grittiness of his novels. This one is right up there with authenticity, a topical story and a good narrator. T.F. Muir knows is stuff and I will continue to purchase his Audible books. Another 4 star novel!

The novel (excuse the pun!) modern storyline !

I love the narrator. One of the absolute best on Audio. Love his acting. His accent is wonderful.

Great addition to the series

I’ve really enjoyed these books from the beginning and this is a strong addition to the series. It’s a great storyline with lots of twists. My only gripe is that the character of Jessie is becoming more annoying with each book and now seems too absurd to be real.
Very well narrated.

Another good listen

David Montieth is such a good narrator and perfect for this series. I've enjoyed all the books, including this one, though have never heard the word "chuckled" used so frequently! 😂 I hope the series continues.

Simply brilliant

Firstly, perfect narration as always by David Monteith.

Really interesting and up to date storyline dealing with romance scams and revenge. Fast paced with lots of twists and turns as always, which held your attention to the end. Gilchrist's family and friends make an appearance throughout but don't overshadow the main storyline.

Roll on the next book.

THE KILLING MOOD

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it wasn't as exciting as previous outings for DC I Gilchrist, but it still had lots of twists and turns and, yet again, gripped the reader from start to finish! I do hope there will be more to come.

Wow, so much swearing! Hence 3 stars for story.

I love this series, and the narrator is awesome, one of my top 5.
I found this book at times very hard to listen too, the amount of swearing in many of the chapters even for me is way over the top, I found myself tutting at the use of fuck, fucking, and occasional cunt, used so often.
I am no prude and understand that swearing is normal, ish....... But surely by now someone would have told DCI Dain to stop his f ing swearing by now.
If you can switch of the cusses this book is full off, the normal twist and turns, enjoyable... and kept me on the edge until the end.

This is the best book in the series

I enjoyed the plot, the characters and their developing stories. Great narration as usual but even that seemed better perhaps because Frank Muir's writing also gets better and better.
