Story
From the moment I saw Ann, I knew she was perfect for me. Her beauty and her social connections would make my miserable life so much better. It didn’t matter that I didn’t love her. I would give her the lifestyle she craved, and she would give me the life I deserved. But soon my marriage vows were a noose around my neck. I longed to escape my beautiful, horrible wife. And then I saw her and I knew there was only one way out.

My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both.

Our new home was meant to be a chance for us to start again; to make new friends and forget the past. And as I look around the barbeque we’ve thrown for our neighbors, I dare to dream that things will be all right. I watch my husband joking as he flips burgers and my daughter turning cartwheels on our sun-bleached lawn. And then my gaze falls on my son, Jacob, and his new girlfriend, Rose, in her light blue jeans and her green crop top. There is a worried expression clouding her beautiful eyes.... The next day I get a call from Rose’s mother that chills me to the bone.

Great tale
- By Kerri H on 10-07-22
Summary
A completely addictive and gripping psychological thriller
“There’s no place like home.” That’s what I tell myself as I pull another flawless meal from the oven. This perfect house on a quiet street was supposed to be my sanctuary, a place to recover. But everything changed the moment I saw that woman in the charity shop. She triggered something dark, buried deep within my memory....
Now I’ve started forgetting small things, like locking the front door.
And bigger things, like remembering to pick my little girl up from nursery.
I feel terrified every time I pass through a particular spot in our living room.
And sometimes, when I’m alone, I’m sure I can hear a baby crying....
I think the woman in the shop knows what happened to me. But if I can’t trust myself to believe she’s real, who will?
One of the most gripping and heart-pounding psychological thrillers you’ll ever listen to! If you were totally hooked by The Wife Between Us, The Girl on the Train, or The Woman in the Window, you won’t be able to turn this jaw-dropping thriller off until it’s finished.

Weak characters. WEAK ENDING.
I am not a fan of books that portray women as hysterical or emotional. I'm even less of a fan of books that equate emotional women to mentally unstable women. This is lazy writing. Completely unoriginal and unimaginative. The vague references to "the clinic" where Diane stayed after her baby's death were just insulting. When writers don't do their research about mental health and the treatment involved it truly makes me angry. Diane was a weak character who cried and drank wine every 30 seconds. It was exhausting listening to her be so pathetic. Then suddenly in the last 2 minutes of the book she becomes super mom and manages to narrowly avoid having her daughter taken to another country? Ridiculous. Everything about this book was ridiculous. If someone is stalking you, call the police don't crash your car. And why was it never addressed that Pam had let Emma out of the house? Pam really seemed to have it out for Diane and her children. It's ridiculous that Paul still wanted to be with her. As if he never cared about his children at all. Then again. Paul wasn't a well developed character. None of the characters were developed. They were all static, boring one dimensional space fillers. I didn't even care about Emma to be honest. I kept hoping for some kind of redeemable quality in Paul. But no, he was complete trash. Like, why would he want to be with a woman like Pam after what she did? And why did the book end just as Diane seemed to be getting interesting? This book was not good. I don't trust this author to do anything better. There was nothing heart pounding or even remotely intriguing about this book but I shouldn't be surprised given the lame book title. Good grief.

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH
The story is a non starter. I guessed what had Happened WAY before the end. There were more 'I'm
Sorry' s' in the book than I can count. The main character is pathetic.. The Narrator had only 1 voice and I was BORED to tears. Questions raised were not answered.. And overall just a damp squid. Avoid.

NOT my favourite........
I've listened to quite a few Valerie Keogh stories now and they are full of twists, turns and all things unexpected. I loved them.
This one though, not so. Although there were a few gear changes, I can't decide if it was the narrator that I didn't warm to, the seemingly far-fetched and unlikely plot or a combo of the two. My last 4 or 5 stories have been VK's so maybe I just need a change of author for a while. I certainly don't rave over this one as I did the first couple but then if this had been my first novel of hers, I may have absolutely loved it!

Lingeringly tragic...
The idea behind her phycological thriller was genius,, but there was so little interaction between her and other characters even her daughter. It was told entirely the whole time through her own perception and thoughts, and her personality was so lacking despite what should have been an dramatically interesting character I felt she "drivelled" on. It's very ambitious to presume you can focus an entire novel around one soul person and expect to keep the reader entertained. Honestly from the author to the moaning voice of the audible narrative this was torture. Will definitely be asking for a refund.

such a shame!
I thought this would be good from reading some of the reviews and the blurb but no I should have took the advice from the bad ones this time! The story had potential but it was so infuriating listening to another book where the main character is portrayed as a wet pathetic woman. The only positive is Emma Newman...a great narrator! but unfortunately no amount of good narration could redeem this book for me. I don't recommend wasting your time or a credit on this one.

Slow and unsatisfying
This is the first negative review I’ve ever written and I’m kind of nervous because all of the other reviews were so good. Here goes...
The story was very slow and clunky. Things didn’t start getting interesting until about 8 hours in. The supporting characters weren’t well developed so, when they did say something, it was obviously a clue to what was going on. There was really only one person that could be “bad guy” in this story of so, the big reveal had me rolling my eyes. There were no twists or turns. It just felt like a whole lot of nothing.
I say all of this with a heavy heart because I really enjoyed Valerie Keogh’s last book. I’m sure that the next one will be better.
Emma Newman slayed as always. I don’t know if I would have kept listening if she wasn’t narrating.

Whiny and dumb main character
You are meant to feel sorry for the main character, but it’s difficult since all she does is get drunk, do stupid things, believe anything she is told, blames everyone else and then cries about it. I sympathize more for everyone else in the story who had to be in her presence.
The story is okay, but I couldn’t finish it since the main character cannot accept blame and consequences for her actions and focuses on getting revenge on her husband, who wasn’t even the one behind everything. Super lame and stupid. Grow up and get a job, lady.
