About this listen

The brilliant psychological thriller from bestseller Valerie Keogh.

His prized possession...his greatest mistake?

From the moment I saw Ann, I knew she was perfect for me.

Her beauty and her social connections would make my miserable life so much better. It didn’t matter that I didn’t love her. I would give her the lifestyle she craved, and she would give me the life I deserved...

But soon my marriage vows were a noose around my neck.

I longed to escape my beautiful, horrible wife.

And then I saw her and I knew there was only one way out...

Don't miss the thriller by Valerie Keogh! Perfect for fans of Sue Watson, Shalini Boland and K.L. Slater.

Critic reviews

"Keogh is the queen of compelling narratives and twisty plots." (Jenny O'Brien)

"A wonderful book, I can’t rate this one highly enough. If only there were ten stars, it’s that good. Valerie Keogh is a master story-teller, and this is a masterful performance." (Anita Waller, bestselling author)

Not the best but not bad

I took a stab in the dark with this as it had little reviews but positive ones. Unfortunately, it was a dragged out and I felt that more depth could have been put into the characters rather than focusing on the past so much. It’s easy to follow and okay to listen to if you are a casual listener but if you want to get your teeth into something gritty and good there’s others better suited.

Bizarre story

Very strange, but entertaining. Not really like either of the other books I have so far read by this author, which were both more standard Domestic Suspense novels. Good narration.

Easy to follow

Something you can follow easily without making a lot of notes. A very pleasant listen. A few twists, but the plot is generally "linear", no jumping back and forth between threads. I also learnt a few new words.
The straightforward plot allows the author time to delve more deeply into the characters, especially the lead character, so we get to know and understand their minds. There are a few sex scenes. Clearly the author is more interested in giving us comprehensive descriptions of the male parts rather than the female parts (!)
It's about Jake Mitchell who leaves home, goes to Oxford and get's himself a very well paid job in The City. He buys a £10M house in Central London, the house gets the best of everything, finally including a Trophy Wife and a handful of staff.
Then, without giving too much of the plot away, his life starts to unravel, and of course being a Thriller, one of the protagonists has to plan a murder.
So, in all it was a great listen, perhaps the ending wasn't all I'd hoped for.

Not what I expected

I have read and enjoyed a lot of Valerie Keogh's work but this one disappointed. A sad, rather strange ending.

Ok..ish.

Frustrated that there’s a lot of emphasis on certain elements of the story that don’t actually go anywhere.

Great read but

This book was gripping - sometimes amusing and engaging - and it was very easy to like the book
The reader was good
However the very end of the book gave the impression that the author wasn’t quite sure how to finish it and the end was not at the same level as the rest of the book

Well..... I didn't see THAT coming!

This is my 3rd or 4th VK listen, and I have to say although a lot of the time, there seems to be a similar thread running throughout all of her novels, I have to say I didn't envisage the last third of the story, AT ALL!
I thought the build was slow and I almost gave up because there seemed to be a lot of "superfluous froth" but I'm glad I stuck with it because everything is apparent later in the story . Loved it!
