About this listen

The new novel by Sunday Times best seller Harriet Evans will enchant her fans with this gripping and heartbreaking tale of a family ripped apart and the extraordinary house they called home. Harriet writes the most delicious, epic stories from the heart since Maeve Binchy and Kate Morton.

Nightingale House, 1919. Liddy Horner discovers her husband, the world-famous artist Sir Edward Horner, burning his best known painting, The Garden of Lost and Found, days before his sudden death.

Nightingale House was the Horner family's beloved home - a gem of design created to inspire happiness - and it was here Ned painted The Garden of Lost and Found, capturing his children on a perfect day, playing in the rambling Eden he and Liddy made for them.

One magical moment. Before it all came tumbling down....

When Ned and Liddy's great-granddaughter Juliet is sent the key to Nightingale House, she opens the door onto a forgotten world. The house holds its mysteries close, but she is in search of answers. For who would choose to destroy what they love most? Whether Ned's masterpiece - or, in Juliet's case, her own children's happiness.

Something shattered this corner of paradise. But what?

The Garden of Lost and Found - utterly brilliant

I have not been so obsessed with a book for years and listening on Audible made it even more real!

What a brilliant story, I loved the weaving back and forth between the points in time and the characters were like my own family by the end!

Well recommended...

Beautiful story

Evocative and descriptively written, a beautiful story of one family passing through generations. Joy and tragedy intermingle, finding resonance in our own lives.. Absolutely engaging and enjoyable, I strongly recommend!

The way she mixes reality with faith and optimism

I read Harriet Evans because her narrative is insightful and her characters are real. Her stories have layers and keep me absorbed throughout. Everyone needs some escapism and for me this is what her books represent.

Mystical and Intriguing

A beautiful novel that opens doors in directions you weren't sure it was taking you. Things you could have realised earlier spring to life later on in the book as the characters pasts and futures are slowly unveiled

Strong story, brilliant performance

I thoroughly enjoyed this family saga across the generations. The way the story was laid out kept my attention for the entire story. I hadn’t come across Kristen Atherton before, but she is a talented performer. Each voice distinct enough that you always knew who was talking. Harriet Evans is an excellent storyteller. I shall be looking out for more of her books. 16 hours simply flew by.
