Summary
1899. Josie has never questioned her life in a mining village on the South Yorkshire coalfield. But everything changes when she meets Tommy from the neighbouring village. Tommy has been destined for a life underground since the moment he was born. But he has far bigger dreams.
Josie and Tommy become fast friends, united by their desire for something better and by their fascination with the local gentry who have their keeping. Wealthy and glamorous, the Sedgewicks of Silvermoor inhabit a world that is utterly forbidden to Tommy and Josie. Yet as the new century dawns, and the pair become entangled with the grand family, they discover a long hidden secret and learn that nothing is impossible.

Great audiobook
I think this is one of the best audio books I have listened to by Tracy Rees. Possibly because of the excellent narration. Both narrators had accents which suited the story, and they really brought it to life.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Interesting story, well narrated which kept my attention throughout. and I was sorry when it came to an end. Some surprises along the way and several heart in mouth moments. The mining background seemed well researched. I enjoyed it more than The Note but not as much as Amy Snow and Florence Grace.

Not the best book I have ever listened to, but enjoyable despite the highly improbable ending!
This gothic romance complete with baying hounds, wicked fathers, and huge black horses, was set in the Edwardian South Yorkshire mining community. The story was wildly improbable, but none the less fun to romp through. Narration was good, and certain elements of the story, particularly around the detail of the miner’s lot underground at the turn of the 19th century, was very interesting and vivid.

Excellent story and naarration
I loved this story. The characters were totally believable and I cared about what happened to them.
I have read most of Tracy Rees' books and have enjoyed them all but I think this my favourite so far.
The narration was wonderful, there is nothing worse than listening to a book when the accents are poor, these two narrators were spot on.
I throughly recommend it.

Lovely story
A lovely story, always a sign of a good audio book if you have to keep putting your cross stitch down to dry your eyes.

Engaging
It was a gentle but detailed account of life in a mining community at the turn of the century. Really enjoyed it. Nice narrations and a twee but not sickly story.
