Bob Howard is an IT specialist and field agent for the Laundry, the branch of Her Majesty's secret service that deals with occult threats. Overworked and underpaid, Bob is used to his two jobs overflowing from a strict nine to five, and since his wife, Mo, has a very similar job description, he understands that work will sometimes follow her home, too. But when 'work' involves zombie assassins and minions of a mad god's cult, he realises things are spinning out of control.

There is not one book in this series that I don't like, if you haven't tried them then you should if sci fi is your thing.

Jack Hawkins is possibly my favourite narrator of audio books. he's excellent at differentiating the various characters, and his pacing brings life to the story.

Charles Stross does it again. An excellent follow up to The Jenifer Morgue. If you enjoy Lovecraft read the Launry Files.

Another excellent outing from Bob and The Laundry

Brilliant. I'm glad I didn't read this instead as I would have got nothing else done until finished.
I do wonder however about the state of the authors mind, to contour up a tale such as this.

And yet again, Mr Stross provides a gripping story, well told with a humorous cant, a believable 'everyman' protagonist and a truly deep investigation into the Dark Realms. By coincidence, I was finishing this audiobook on a train from Devon, just as we whizzed past Brookwood Cemetary - ineffably coincidental and yet, just perfect for a novelist whose work seems so relevant even now, over a decade after its creation. Kudos, too, to Mr Hawkins for an engaging performance - I really enjoyed this book.

Compelling continuation of the Laundry List saga

I struggled but just couldn't finish this. It's well written, well paced, the world building is clever and complex, the plot is ok but...

One the author has nerd mapped everything to the Nth degree killing any sense of mystery.

Two the protagonist is awful, Bob is petty, passive aggressive, relentlessly snarky and contemptuous of almost everything. We've all met Bob, basically he's a loser. Except Stross wants to pretend he isn't "you are extremely talented Mr Bob", it all comes off like the revenge fantasy of the fat nerd you went to school with.

The storyline was interesting but I nearly gave up during the repeated sections of complaining about his lot in life. It didn't add anything to the book and just felt self indulgent. Not sure if I can face the next one after this.
