Summary

It's the end of the world as we know it, but someone still needs to do the paperwork.

Incomprehensible horrors from beyond are going to devour our world, but that’s no excuse to get all emotional about it.

Morag Murray works for the secret government organization responsible for making sure the apocalypse goes as smoothly and as quietly as possible. In her first week on the job, Morag has to hunt down a man-eating starfish, solve a supernatural murder, and, if she's got time, prevent her own inevitable death.

Oddjobs is a sideswipe at the world of work and a fantastical adventure featuring amphibian wannabe gangstas, mad old cat ladies, ancient gods, apocalyptic scrabble, fish porn, telepathic curry, and, possibly, the end of the world before the weekend.

Generally I loved it, but...

I will admit that I found this audiobook a little bit of a struggle solely because of the narration. Dont get me wrong, Matthew Lloyd Jones is superb and brings the characters to life with ease,. The one thing that really bugged me was the over emphasis of the alien names. I generally listen to audiobooks when I wish to relax, last thing at night etc, the over emphasis of alien names really made it difficult to relax and enjoy the excellent story. It should be noted that the subsequent books in the series, by the same narrator do not have the same issue as the narrator does not overplay the alien names to such a degree. If you can get over the aforementioned issue then this series is very much worth a listen.

Fascinating and bewildering

This was completely fascinating to me but the the first half incredibly bewildering. I didn't know what was going on in the beginning. The narrator was brilliant.

Really liked story but..

The performance was great and I loved the use of accents but the Alien language was too harsh and shouty, and often it meant I skipped section where it was used a lot - which was a shame. Not sure if I’ll get the next instalment of the narration of the aliens is the same.

Bit of fun

Bit of fun, laughed at points (although most of the time the humour was only smirk-worthy). A little bit pantomime-like, but quite a fun idea for a setting for a story. Not sure I'm convinced that the whole series will be worth my time so this might be the first and last one I listen to, but you never know.

My kind of quirky dark humour!

I stumbled upon this audio book by complete accident, but so happy I did! It is an entertaining story, with great one-liners and believable characters. The dark humour might not be to everyone's tastes but I certainly enjoyed it and found it highly entertaining. Matthew Lloyd Davies does a fantastic array of character voices and accents, and I thoroughly enjoyed his style of narration. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Very entertaining

Hilariously entertaining from start to finish, made even more so because I’m a Brum born and bred. Narrator did a good job, I enjoyed it so much I won’t take umbrage with the “Brummy” accent.

Zany mayhem. Funny as!!

The end is nigh & all the mayhem that goes with it. The Venislarn are ready the humans....not so much. I laughed out loud more than once at this book.
These authors honestly need more recognition for the zany mayhem they write about. From Clovenhoof to this. How their heads must click clack with this stuff. Hilariously crazy stuff!
If you like Hitch hikers Guide & Red Dwarf this is for you.
The narrator needs a medal for the pronunciations alone. Excellent stuff all round.

really, really funny

So, I don't write many reviews - but I'm feeling generous and this was really, really funny. Mash up of (sort of) Cthulhu mythos, Men in Black, Shaun of the Dead, Who Dares Wins and lots of other stuff delivered with tongue in cheek panache. Great performance from the narrator. Just a caution - you may be offended if you live in Birmingham. Or any adjacent inter dimensional space.

If you like Terry Prachett this is for you

What an interesting and different book. This was not overly my cup of tea but if you enjoy sci fi and Terry Prachett novels this book will be for you. It’s clever and exciting and very different. Worth a listen if you fancy something different from the norm.

Workplace comedy meets Lovecraftian horror

Throughly enjoyed both the story and performance - a workplace comedy set in world edging towards a Lovecraft apocalypse.

Matthew Lloyd Davies gives a great performance bringing a real charm to an ensemble of well written characters.

The fictional universe has great potential for exploration and I’m looking forward to the next instalments.

I regret having left this book languishing on my wishlist for so long.
