Summary

Some bodies just won’t stay buried.

When a client tells Sam Applewhite she’s seen ghosts in the nearby graveyard, Sam dismisses it as the ramblings of an old woman. She’s got bigger things to worry about. Keeping on top of her job at DefCon4 Security Services isn’t easy - particularly since her manager is a cactus, and no one will tell her what her job actually is.

But when the ghost-spotting client goes missing, and only Sam suspects foul play, she is compelled to dig deeper. Aided by her retired stage magician father and the owner of the most outlandish junk shop on the sea front, Sam dives into a mystery involving psychotic seals, unexploded air force munitions, DIY foot surgery, and a corpse that just won’t quit.

Terrific writing duo strike again!

Well described characters, darkly comic situations, masterly narration/performance. Who knew Skegness was such a hotbed of criminal carryings on!

Another entertaining series from the creative duo

I gave the Clovenhoof books a go on a whim and really enjoy them. So I decided to give the Sam Applewhite series a listen. It's obviously a different theme but has the same charm to the characters, sense of humour, and plots that engage you.
The narration needs no review, as it's Matthew Lloyd Davies.... enough said.

Excellent

Loved this for a fun relaxing experience. The narrator really gets into the characters as he goes along.

Anarchic start to a new crime series - great fun

If you have read books by this prolific writing team and enjoyed them Then it is easy to say ‘dive in, you’ll love it’ and if you haven’t it is a great starting point for a new comic crime/mystery series with a dollop of anarchic horrors.
Sam is busy with her job(s) and gets caught up in a very strange situation with a seal and then the situation descends into chaos with some fantastic characters. I found it a great listen on audible and would thoroughly recommend.

Finished it, loved it, bought the next one!

The joy in finding a brand new series by the amazing Clovenhoof team!!!!
These authors and the narrator are a perfect match.
The story was a little slow starting but when it did I got thoroughly hooked.
They never fail to make me smile, perfect escapism for dark times.

Wonderful book.

Have now listened to all three of this series. And this and all the others are just as wonderful as each other. The narrator as usual is just perfect. The characters are developed all through and I really found I cared about what happened to them. The story is witty and so well written. Now have to wait for the fourth one to come out.

A charmingly funny listen

I received a code for a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admit to starting this book and my first thought was that I wouldn't enjoy it. How wrong I was!! I finished listening to the story with a smile on my lips.

The best way I can describe it is Dial M for Middlesborough meets slapstick comedy. Please don't be put off by my description, it’s funny, charming, and with some loveable support characters. It is no whodunit as you know the killer early on but the fun is watching the killer and his accomplice desperately try to get rid of the body. There are a couple of slightly dark humorous parts but I think the story needed them and they were brilliantly written.

Overall an enjoyable funny listen with dark humour and a brilliant narration from Matthew Lloyd Davies. This is a first for me with these 2 authors but I will look forward to another Sam Applewhite series.
