About this listen

'One of the greatest storytellers of our time' Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

'A story of love, family, unbreakable bonds, bravery and hope' Christy Lefteri, author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo

The Four Winds, an instant New York Times number one bestseller and Richard and Judy Book Club Pick, is a deeply moving story about the strength and resilience of women and the bond between mother and daughter, by the multi-million-copy bestselling author of The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah.

She will discover the best of herself in the worst of times . . .

Texas, 1934. Elsa Martinelli had finally found the life she’d yearned for. A family, a home and a livelihood on a farm on the Great Plains. But when drought threatens all she and her community hold dear, Elsa’s world is shattered to the winds.

Fearful of the future, when Elsa wakes to find her husband has fled, she is forced to make the most agonizing decision of her life. Fight for the land she loves or take her beloved children, Loreda and Ant, west to California in search of a better life. Will it be the land of milk and honey? Or will their experience challenge every ounce of strength they possess?

From the overriding love of a mother for her child, the value of female friendship and the ability to love again – against all odds – Elsa’s incredible journey is a story of survival, hope and what we do for the ones we love.

'A classic storyteller, The Four Winds sees her at the top of her game' Matt Haig, author of The Midnight Library

Really interesting read about the great depression it showed the human struggle to survive in a time when those around you had nothing either, but the kindness of strangers who having nothing themselves gave what they could materially or emotionally. The need to fight just to live and the hardship that you endured to survive. An inspirational story that makes you grateful for what you have.

You will enjoy the story as much as the narration. I loved it and I cried at the end, totally unexpected for me. Just brilliant.

A story about women and their relationships with each other through what has to be one of the darkest periods of American history. the rich descriptions of nature and it's wrath are outstanding as always in Kristin Hannah's books. I cried rivers during this, truly moving story of love, climate crisis, evonomic depression and the ever prevailing human spirit

I loved this book . Being not from the USA, I have learnt more , indirectly , about the background of the communist black lists in Hollywood . Plus the time periods of the dustbowl era have become more realistically placed as just pre war 2 . In historical terms that is my parents generation . The descriptions of the Texas panhandle landscapes, and the living conditions of the incomers in California were so realistic . The narration gave a voice to Elsa ,that was so credible . A brilliant listen . I

A wonderful story highlighting the strength of love. This is not fiction, it’s a sad indictment of human nature against, it’s fear, it’s greed and it’s selfishness, and the hope that generous people hold in their hearts. Thank you to Kristin Hannah for this outstanding reminder to all of us. I listened to the final chapters sobbing. Other passengers on my flight must be wondering why this silly about to be 60 year old man has AirPods in his ears and has tears running down his face!!

Read this wonderful book I dare you!
