Summary
Cassel
When I gave up life as a hitman, I thought everything was going to be better. I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally…and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me - I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t…quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me? He might not know about my past as a hitman or that I don’t need to be protected, but I’m prepared to do everything I can to save the day.
Jeremy
When my past comes back with a vengeance, I’ve never felt so alone and out of my element. That is, until Cassel offers me information that I desperately need, forcing me to drag him straight into danger. The issue is that he’s too sweet and innocent for this world, and I’m not sure that I’m strong enough to protect him, but I can’t bring myself to push him away. As truths come to light, I realize that maybe Cassel isn’t quite who I thought he was, and maybe we’re not so different after all.
While you can listen to The Former Assassin’s Guide on its own, you’ll get maximum enjoyment by listening to The Hitman’s Guide series first. This book contains speedy car chases and not-so-speedy ATV rides, a wager Cassel is determined to win even if it kills him, and way-too-tight sparkly spandex suits.

Perfection
Ah, the bliss of finding a book, indeed a whole series, that is the perfect mix of intriguing story, action, humour, romance, and amazing characters. I loved this book so much, it made me laugh so much, kept me hooked till the end, and got me so invested in sweet Cassel and big hearted Jeremy and their epic adventure. Thank you Alice Winters for this! 10/10, would recommend to anyone.

I laughed so much I woke my dog
I haven’t laughed so much since the first Hitman’s Guide book. Ms. Winters is so smart on how she plots how each action that continues throughout the book. It’s not dull and there are no breaks or lulls in the story. I couldn’t put it down. I adore Cassel and I’m so happy for him. He has a family and love. I did not expect to like Jeremy. He was such a jerk before but now I see he just needed a family too. I can’t get enough of this group. Gimme more. Michael Firraiuolo is amazing as usual. I have no complaints or criticism about his performance.

I didn’t know there was a cassel spinoff!
I read this after hitmans guide book 4. I wish the title indicated this was a Cassel spinoff. I really enjoyed this book more that hitmans guide 4. I hope a sequel happens!

Amazing!
Alice Winters and Michael Ferraiuolo are the dream team of audiobooks! Ferraiuolo nails Winters’ characters’ voices incredibly well. The snark, the humor and the rare shows of vulnerability, and does it without laughing out loud, which deserves an award.
The story itself is a madcap of action, adventure and romance that would make Leland proud. I’ve been one of those readers who has been waiting for Cas and Jer-bear’s book (and nagging for it) for ages. I was not disappointed. Alice Winters writes amazingly well rounded characters, with laugh out loud humor, and great plot.

My favourite story within the Hitman world. Casserole and Jeremy are perfect for each other, both flawed but willing to do the right thing.

Very fun spin-off!!!
I really love Cassel and Jeremy in the Hitman's Guide. series so I absolutely love seeing them get their own adventure. With Leland and Jackson and Henry along, too. Perfect amount of chaos, giggles, and heat. These two series of books are a lot of fun and always a for sure buy when I see the new book come out.

Formula fades the second time around
This is a paler version of Leland and Jackson’s storyline. In both:
-the hitman is the scrawny, lippy one without a family
-the cop is the big, solid dependable one
-there’s a dog
-Leland’s main purpose is to crack off-color, lecherous jokes
It was hilarious in book 1, and still fun in books 2 and 3. But this book featuring Castle and Jeremy’s HEA didn’t really add anything new.

I think the author hates other women?
Doesn't feel like much of a spin-off, it feels more like a continuation of the Hitman's Guide series. You still have Leland and Jackson trying to carry this book and their story continues from where the third book left off.
I found Jeremy to be kind of boring and a more incompetent and not funny version of Jackson (he REALLY does act like Jackson tho). As for Cassel I found his character very jarring. I felt like there were random times his character turned into Leland for comedic reasons and then switched back to his own character.
I felt like this book being a "spin-off" was a missed opportunity to change things up. Cassel and Jeremy aren't meant to be funny so maybe the author should have leaned more into romance and drama for this one. You know Cassel and Jeremy aren't interesting protagonists when you have to bring Leland and Jackson from the main series to help carry the book (it wasn't even a small cameo they are here throughout the majority of the story). Also I wasn't interested in the romance between Cassel and Jeremy because they kept doing that thing they do in the hitman series where Leland wants to run into danger and Jackson says "I'm not letting you go alone!" I feel like we're supposed to swoon over how protective Jeremy is over Cassel but like that's all they do in this book and when you take the hitman's guide series into consideration it's not as cute and romantic anymore it felt a little stale (it's also why Jeremy felt like a Jackson clone to me).
Also I picked up on a pattern in the third book of the Hitman's guide series which has me wondering if the author just hates other women. I've noticed that a woman is introduced in every book and they're always the bad guy. This has also ruined any suspense and mystery these books try to go for when they're like "who could be the traitor?" The only 2 consistent women in the series are Jackson's sister who barely exists and his mom who's the b****y mother-in-law.
