Summary

Beware of Russians bearing gifts.

Defectors are not always welcome.

Is the information they bring worth the cost of protecting them for the rest of their lives? Is it even genuine? Might they be double agents?

These are some of the questions facing MI6 when a Russian agent hands himself in to them in Denmark.

As a team begins to assess his value, his former employers in the Kremlin develop a brutal plan to show that no defector will ever be safe.

And they know where to find him. Which means there must be a mole in MI6.

So it is that the cavaliers of Six find themselves being interrogated by nondescript Jonas Merrick of Five—the man called back from retirement and his beloved caravan, the man the young guns call the Eternal Flame because 'he never goes out'.

But while he may be grey, Jonas is also ruthless. As he quietly works through the suspects in London, and violent mayhem breaks out in Denmark, Jonas plans not just to unmask a traitor, but to hit back at the Russians with deadly force.

First encountered in The Crocodile Hunter, Jonas Merrick is set to become one of the great figures of modern spy fiction.

he could feel his privilege crawling away from him

This is brilliant. Utterly captivating and plotted majestically bringing three plot strands into an epic finish. This a perfect book for me, crafted to life by Ben Allen - another find - who managed to narrate and speak for a large number of women, without really changing his voice. I love that.

Stumbled across Gerald Seymour in my deep dive attempt to find more inspirational intelligent spy thrillers. Jonas Merick is already in his dotage, I hope there are years enough in him to allow Mr Seymour to load us up with more of this modern day spy thrillers.

And now I have to wait for the next.

Love this Narration perfect for the tale the Web of intrigue and the way the strands draw together.

Lame

To be fair, you have to admire the research and workmanship that went into it. But it is plodding and has few genuine moments of originality. You sort of intuit what is about to happen before it happens for the most part and the characters are stereotyped and dull in my view.

Rubbish!

Dull, dreary, drab. Don’t bother.
The story jumps all over the place so you never know where you are and the narrator makes it sound like a dirge.
If this “character “ is supposed to be a mix of George Smiley and Inspector Morse then get someone who can lift him from the page instead of a narrator who’s style is similar to stodgy, lukewarm porridge.
Avoid.

A thrilling listen

A good tale, well told.
Satisfyingly plotted and inter woven. Well characterised. Beautifully performed - the reader is pleasingly multi-voiced.

Slow, sluggish and full of tropes.

As a lover of the British spy genre I found this to be hard work. The story itself failed to grip me, the characters were quite two-dimensional and uninteresting, and there were too many tropes for me. Le Carre it certainly was not.
The narration failed to ignite any excitement and was pretty monotone and slow.
