Of all the Emperor’s sons who fell to Chaos, it is perhaps Magnus the Red whose tale is the most tragic. Sanctioned because of his desire for knowledge, chastised, judged, and shattered to his very elements – there is much for the Crimson King to feel vengeful for. Yet revenge is not the only thing that draws him to Terra alongside the Warmaster’s besieging armies. He seeks something, a fragment, the missing piece of himself that lies within the most impregnable place on the planet – the inner sanctum of the Imperial Palace.

The best Heresy novel to date
For newcomers to the 40k universe, the Heresy novels are set - much like the Clone Wars - in the build-up to the most pivotal moment of the saga. The known universe is controlled by the Emperor and his sons control legions of super-soldiers that fight for survival against alien races and ultimately, each other. This last is where the Heresy novels focus.
The Flight of the Eisenstein tells of a moment where one of the soldiers is faced with a moment of choice and a matter of conscience. Ordinarily the hero would be a cypher, ultimately doomed to die and serving little purpose except to drive the arc forward. Here instead, we're given a book of fully-fleshed characters with dreams, desires and motivations, set against a backdrop of war, intrigue and a literal fight for one's soul.
The Heresy series is not easy to get into without a little understanding of background of the 40K universe but as with False Gods (Book 2) this is a fine place to start. It works almost as well as a standalone as it does in the series and I would rate it as high as Fulgrim or Legion as the best of the series. Garro is a fascinating character, bound to serve but with his own scale of morality that sets him apart from the dour, unimaginative heroes of most space operas.
As the book goes on, we're treated to glimpses inside a fascinating society, great battles and a tense chase before things really start to get nasty. Flight of the Eisenstein is one I often come back to. Jonathan Keeble does an outstanding job given the sheer number of imposing voices he has to conjure and never lets interest falter for a moment. Buy and savour with confidence

Great book, but.... sssSSssSSSssss
Don't normally write reviews. But it has to be mentioned, that the every time the narrator encounters an 's' - your headphones are going to explode. This somewhat distracts from the otherwise great story.
I've had to listen to this at 50% volume, compared to the previous books in the series.

Is ok
Story was written quite differently I felt than the previous three. They seemed to talk like the nights of old rather than other Astartes in previous books. Not too sure about the narrator either.. his bad guys all sounded like a season one Blackadder. Talented chap for sure, but perhaps just not my cup of tea.

The best of the series
Whilst the 3 books before this are about as well written, the story quality after this book starts to fall off with the same events happening just from different perspectives. Jonathan Keeble, however, is by far the best narrator of the series. His range of voices is excellent and they're all appropriate, very addictive to listen to.

Incredible addition to the series
I came to this series of books without a very deep knowledge of the lore around Warhammer 40k. The first three books were incredible as a way of getting one into the story (other reviewers have compared them to the Star Wars Prequel trilogy, and I think this is the best comparison).
However, while the first three books are a tragedy - seeing a slow motion decent to a seemingly unstoppable disaster - this is the first book that truly takes the story off in a new direction. The alternative view of events already seen in the previous books makes for an interesting comparison (so I’d definitely recommend reading/listening to these in order) and the ongoing tale is an exciting listen that kept me engaged the whole way through.
The performance was also excellent, and really made me feel the importance and weight of events - although some of the voices were a bit too similar on occasion, making it difficult to always understand exactly who was speaking at specific moments.
No question I would recommend this, both for seasoned lore experts and (like me) comparative neophytes

Great continuation of the Horus Heresy
What did you love best about The Flight of The Eisenstein?
The rich language and detailed descriptions Swallow used in this book impressed me and Keebles performance kept me engaged.
What other book might you compare The Flight of The Eisenstein to and why?
Galaxy in Flames : The Horus Heresy. This book provides a deeper look into plot from other character's perspectives.
What about Jonathan Keeble’s performance did you like?
Overall Voice and characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, but I often found myself listening to 1 more chapter than intended.

Just ok.
The book is fine by itselft but as part of a series it struggles. Story wise there is tremendous overlap with the other books, making it impossible to have any excitment or sense if urgency. You already know whatas going to happen from the other books.
The performance while not bad by any stretch of the imagination was a stuggle to listen to as the voice and sytle of speech does match the same character s from the previous novels. They should have kept the same actor or dobe some research to immitate the voices from the other titles.

Mediocre story, the narration is weird
The story was nothing special, there were some interesting bits of lore, but in my opinion, Graham McNeil does a much better work at describing the corruption a Chaos.
The narrator goes pretty much overboard with the acting; half the Death Guard (even in their uncorrupted state) sound like zombie orcs, there are some that speak like Gollum (Kaleb, most notably), and some are so posh (Voyen maybe), that such an acting could only fit an arrogant playboy like Fulgrim. Towards the end it got better, or maybe I just got used to is (hence the 3 stars for the narrator.)

Was so sad to see that Toby wasn’t narrating this book, but Jonathan did it justice. The transition from the last book to this one was so well done.
