Summary

Why is it that despite our best efforts, many of us remain fundamentally unhappy and unfulfilled in our lives? In this provocative and inspiring audiobook, David Richo distills 30 years of experience as a therapist to explain the underlying roots of unhappiness - and the surprising secret to finding freedom and fulfillment. There are certain facts of life that we cannot change - the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time.

Richo shows us that by dropping our deep-seated resistance to these givens, we can find liberation and discover the true richness that life has to offer. Blending Western psychology and Eastern spirituality, including practical exercises, Richo shows us how to open up to our lives - including to what is frightening, painful, or disappointing - and discover our greatest gifts.

This was exactly what I needed and for that I feel grateful. I was stuck in a cycle but after this I feel I can move forward. Thank you.

Heavy at times but definitely worth a listen

I found some of the sections a little heavy and difficult to follow. I am not religious or spiritual by nature so this may have made the sections more difficult. Nonetheless, I found a lot of really powerful information in the book and think it is definitely worth a listen.

Everyone needs a listen

As the title says: I think everyone needs a listen. There are lessons and truths in there which can be easy to forget at times but it’s nice to have a reminder. The narrators voice was very calm and soothing and made the experience that much more enjoyable

Deep but understandable if persevered

Coming through Recovery led me to want to explore Spirituality and this book has helped. Being new to spiritual practices and beliefs, this book helped me to progress further in understanding what Spirituality is. The content is sometimes hard to fully grasp as someone new to spirituality but I’m very glad I continued on through the challenging parts that I found hard to comprehend. I would recommend to others on a Spiritual Journey and those who are in any 12th step recovery programme.

a bit too repetitive

the foundation is solid however the repetitively told things get old fast. At some point it almost becomes a jehova witness type persuasion to follow the believes...

Good platform, but goes awry

I like the reader especially for these types of books. The book could've been about a quarter the length. The book made some very good points, but there is a lot of repeating and grandiose assertions. I am surprised at the high ratings this book received from so many people.

ok

I was really excited for this book however once I got into the sick of it a lot of it was lost on me. There are good points about the benefits of positivity, love and healing as well as standards you should hold yourself to, however there was a lot of God pushing.

although this book mentions Buddhism I think overall this would be a really great book for someone who is Christian and grieving over something or moving through a really tough obstacle

I have both audio and the physical book

Its read in a very good pace by the author. Glad to get the audio because its something I plan to listen to every so often especially during life uncomfortable hurtful circumstances... breakups, grieving, etc

The ideas in this book are great to remind us to be mindful and that we are not exempt from unpleasantries of life. It teaches impermanence, hope and mindfulness.

It defines the difference between the undeveloped ego and the unconditional "yes" of life.

Great Advice

The author helps integrate psychological and spiritual growth. He weaves together words in a poetic way.

Perfect when you need overcome hardships

I found this audiobook recently although it was published several years ago…and it is having a life changing effect on my perspective and coping skills during my own overwhelming hardships right now. Even if you are not a practicing Buddhist or Eastern Philosophy, the lessons and information will help anyone who has any belief or religion…or even if you don’t. He speaks to being human and how to cope with several human experiences including hardships. I definitely recommend this audiobook. Not to mention, the narrator is soothing and calm to the soul.

Where emotions meet spirit

Took me a while to get into the book and then I loved it! Loved the connections between emotions and spirit. The practical ways of looking at and dealing with life. Worth listening to again and again. I particularly liked the comparisons on when we are honoring our boundaries and when we are not and when we are managing our emotions and not. A great mirror to help look at myself emotionally and spiritually.
