About this listen
A chilling and transfixing new Merrily Watkins mystery.
Information
'I called on darkness...midnight darkness....'
At the end of the 18th century, the poet William Wordsworth rambled, in a strange visionary haze, from Salisbury Plain up into the Wye Valley. The epic walk changed his life.
More than 200 years later, Oxford student David Vaynor followed the same secluded route and still can't explain what happened to him there. Now he's back, as a police detective investigating a suspicious death, and finds that, in this place of cliffs and chasms, it's far from easy to escape the past.
Meanwhile, Merrily Watkins, diocesan exorcist for Hereford, is being warned that in-depth investigation is not part of her job—a job she may not be holding down for very long. She'll be risking her future to help Vaynor uncover the secrets carried through a haunted landscape by Britain's most revered river.
For behind the scenic beauty are elements that, as Wordsworth wrote, 'promote ill purposes and flatter foul desires.'

missing something.
I have loved and still do all of PRs books, Merrily and her world have kept me drawn in for years and I regularly go back and reread these. I was so excited for this latest instalment but something feels off, I kept going back over previous chapters as it felt like I was missing parts. the story felt somehow lacking. maybe this is me and I shall read something else and then try this again. I will buy the next and hope for the magic of the earlier books.

Merrily and Phil at their best .
Loved it - other worldly but rooted in current social and political reality. The subtle and complex plot twists that Phil Rickman excels at .

more brilliance from Phil Rickman
Fell into it as soon as it started. Once again an excellent story brilliantly narrated. Can't wait for the next one as this was gone too soon.

Phil Rickman books
I love his books so much and have read every single one written by him. Always left though with the feeling of wanting and needing more, and waiting for news of the next one.

good lockdown read
while still really good, not as engaging as previous installments of this fabulous series. i still loved it, but it's not the classic i was hoping for or expecting. however rather than put me off, it has whetted my appetite for the next installment.

Crickey waited so long for this !! Ha ha
I have been waiting I think maybe 4 yrs for this next installment and it was worth it. I suspect Phil Rickman had the revise the whole book due to covid . The early days of the pandemic are the backdrop to this book. I enjoyed it very much and it was great too have Merrily,Jane and Lol back again plus the machinations of the Bishop and the antics of a problematic Druid . More soon please !

Too involved and convoluted
This is the 16th book in the series and for my money, it was over complicated and confusing.
I obviously have enjoyed all the previous 15 books but if you have to skip one, this is the one.
I felt it was badly constructed and jumped around too much.
It was not up to the usual high standard in my humble opinion.
Having said that, I will look forward to any future books involving Merilly Watkins because she and her daughter Jane together with the other locals would be missed greatly if not around any more.
