Summary

Gabby Mays wishes she had her future figured out, like her gorgeous roommate Anna-Marie, who has just landed a role on the hit soap opera Passion Medical. Gabby would give anything to find a career she’s half as passionate about as Anna-Marie is about acting - and a love life that isn’t comprised of nights with a party-sized bag of Doritos and her Netflix account.

When Gabby becomes a recurring extra on Passion Medical, she finds a job she’s surprisingly great at. Even better, her old crush and ex-boss - the sexy, sweet Will Bowen - is writing the scripts, allowing Gabby lots of quality flirting time at the craft services table.

But between feuding divas, fake Emmys, and Gabby’s growing concern that Will might not see her as anything more than a friend, her life on set is quickly becoming a drama worthy of the soaps.

The Extra is a stand-alone romance novel with PG-13 rated content, no cliffhanger, and a swoon-worthy happily-ever-after.

The extra

The story is a disappointingly tedious angstfest with self absorbed characters. The reader did her best. The author writes well

Good book, but narrators voice doesn’t sound 23

I was a bit torn about the book. I hadn’t listened to a book with an acting background before and the story line seemed interesting, so I kept going despite not quite liking the narrator. She didn’t do anything wrong and narrated perfectly fine, but she just didn’t fit the 23 year old character. I am glad I am trough it and didn’t need to pay for it.

Charming in its simple complexity

So the title is an oxymoron but it describes this book, as a simple attraction between two characters not meant to be in love but find a way. This is simple, the complexity comes with the themes, characters, and all the actors' names' when onset.

Flanagan gives a masterful performance of the book, all the characters are easily distinguishable and the narration is made intriguing.

Oh, Gabby…

Let me just start by saying, this book well written, and very well narrated…now, on to Gabby, the main character. What can I say about her, other than she’s ridiculous. She sees herself in the WORST possible light. She’s so down on herself. Her confidence and self esteem are very lack luster, to put it nicely. I want to jerk her up, shake the sh%t out of her, and say “Girl!! Shut up!” All of the “woe is me”, and “I suck at life” BS is so unbecoming. Now, Im not say the lead needs to be the queen of the world, but somewhere in between would be great.

Great book!

This was cute! Definitely not something I would have thought I’d enjoy but I did! Gonna check out the rest of the series.

I quit after 7 chapters.

I can’t say that his book was horrible because it wasn’t. I can’t say that it wasn’t for me because I am used to reading books that have more hero/heroine interaction (aka…..sex). I couldn’t stand the book because it was not clear who the hero was. I assume it was the guy that tired the heroine. But her feelings towards him seem lukewarm at best and there is no indication that the hero sees her other that a person from his past. There is no connection between the two and it gets old quick with the heroines constant self deprecating inner monologue. Ugh I mean really!! The writing I think was good but the connection between characters was very after school special. I won’t t read another book by this author if the rest of them read like this. I can’t believe it’s considered a romance. I’m sure it’s be a hard no for harlequin or Hallmark.

Cute Story

I like stories that are different and end in a good way. The ending of this book evolved and kept me guessing. It did not just have a big rushed drop off.

I listened, but…

It is excruciating being trapped in the depressing thoughts of this sad sack narrator. She spends the majority of the book bemoaning her own mediocrity, perhaps because she assumes that success is an innate attribute and not the result of hard work, sacrifice and the fortitude to push through failure to success. Either way, it was a slog. On the plus side, the plot was cute and the friendship between the main character and her roommate was charmingly drawn.

Save your credit

I made it to chapter 10 before i could not take any more of Gabby's internal worry. There was only so much complaining i could take. Dont waste your monthly credit on Gabby and her worry.

bleak

the only thing i liked about this book was the reader. this story is a tragedy. every step the main character takes ends up in disaster as her life and the life of everyone around her falls apart.
they put in a storyline with her brother becoming a drug addict just cause. everyone is cheating on everyone else. this was just depressing and the love story was almost non-existent. pity, because the author(s) seems capable of writing hints of mutual pining.
also, weird detail: at the beginning we find out that the main character is a virgin. and there is nothing wrong about that but the topic doesn't get touched again in the whole book. JUST KNOW THAT SHE'S A VIRGIN! I don't know if it was added in the attempt to make her seem "pure" or more of a loser but I didn't like it.

I lost interest

Made it to chapter 7 and finally stopped because I really had no idea who her love interest was gonna be, nor what the point of this story is. Does she want to be an actress? She complains about EVERYTHING and EVERYONE! Finally I juat gave up and am on the hunt for a romance. Real romance.

Fun Story

This was a fun story with lots of young angst. I loved the whole idea of them trying to figure out their life path and what they were going to do with their future.

I didn't want the book to end. Reminds me of a soap opera..but better happy ending.
