Summary

In 1974 the brilliant and controversial Brian Clough made perhaps his most eccentric decision: he accepted the Leeds United Manager's job. As successor to Don Revie, his bitter adversary, he was to last 44 days. David Peace takes us into the mind and thoughts of Ol' Big 'Ead himself and brings vividly to life one of postwar Britain's most complex and fascinating characters.

Could listen to more.

Enjoyed but prefer a story in order not jumbled. Too much swearing. A bit is ok but it doesn’t help the story. It is a full story lots to keep absorbing. Good book. On par with the film.

Not unabridged.

Brilliantly performed but if one is following the text he will get lost often. Much of the writing is jumped, skipped, elided. If I were Peace I would be fit to be tied.
But again, beautifully performed, and of course the book is marvelous.

A wonderful insight to one of footballs great men

I saw the film and wanted a deeper insight of the life of Brian. A wonderful insight to one of footballs great men.

So good but why was it abridged?!?

John Simm gives a brilliant narration of a savage, funny and well observed black comedy based on real events.

Why not five stars? Because some clown decided to abridge it. It's David Peace's most accessible novel, it's not very long by modern novel standards. So next time - give us the complete version please.

Gripping and intriguing

The best football box I've read/listened to. I know Clough's family have taken issue with the characterisation in the book, but the desire and drive you need to be a top football manager comes across really well. Even if you're not into football, the themes of admiration, envy, perceived slights and achievement are well represented here. I thought the voice actor was fantastic as well, although probably slightly too aggressive in the style of the book. Top stuff, though.

John Simm was very good, some of the story uses creative licence but very good on the whole

A brilliantly written book but Sims takes it to new heights

Watched the film many years ago and remains one of my all time favourites so wanted to do it it justice and listen to the original. John Simm is outstanding. His tempo and dynamism in his performance allows the listener to feel truly involved and appreciate the life of one of footballs greatest characters!
