Wonderful stuff!
This long awaited tale in the series involving a Maeve and Joss is the best so far. That said, they are all 5* star reads. Both the story and the back story are compelling and exciting. The characters are richly drawn and Caroline Lennon’s narration is faultless as always. For anyone picking this up, I advise picking a quiet place where there will be no interruptions for the final chapter. It had me hiding away and on the edge of my seat. Enjoy!

Superb
I have listened to this entire series back to back, twice, the narration is sublime and the characters are brought to life clearly. Its rare for an audio book to transport me into my imagination like reading does, but I suddenly realised I was totally immersed in the story. This series is intelligently written, with plenty of clear plot lines and action. Unlike many police procedurals the characters are very recognisable, but never tip over into becoming caricatures. I think it's worth listening to them in order

6* book!
I love this series and this is the best yet, I hope there will be another book.
Get me! With the lexicon of words at my disposal I chose such a seemingly prosaic one as “love”. This book needs no hyperbole nor advertising hype, it literally speaks for itself. It’s beautifully written, with a mix of the mundane, suspense, humour, (which is very much like my own), no spoilers, but the “bamboo” made me laugh it was so perfect at that point, and I think the whole book is like that. The characters and relationships are real! And I’ll miss them.
I find myself veering between, tension, hope, sadness’s, holding my breath and smiling! For me, it’s that good.
The combination of Jane Casey, as author, and the superb narration by Caroline Lennon, is a marriage made in audiobook heaven.
I loved it! I dislike recommending books to friends as everyone has different taste. I await the next instalment.

Good story well told
Took a while to become engaged but this is a good story, a plausible detective in Maeve. with excellent support from her colleagues and superb narration by Caroline. Perhaps a wee bit long at 12 and a half hours but interesting enough to hold my attention throughout. So much so that I have now purchased the first in this series (again a long read but with several narrators) and hope that it too will keep me absorbed. Not sure if I will manage to listen to all of her adventures as apart from Helen Fields, that has not happened thus far ..... but I read/listen in hope!

Best in the series so far!
Another great book in a great series! This time Maeve and Josh are investigating the death of a young woman whose dismembered body is found by a mudlarker in the River Thames. Their investigation takes them to the Chiron, a secretive gentlemans club.
As always, the book is superbly written. The storyline is interesting and moves along quickly. Alongside this both Maeve and Josh have some deeply personal issues to deal with, which at times were truly heartbreaking. I love the realtionship between these two, and I'm still not sure where I'd like it to end up, but it's one of the best partnerships in the crime writing world.
I think this is my favourite book of the series so far, but I hope there'll be many more.
Excellent narration, as always, from Caroline Lennon (to me she IS Maeve!)

Bring Sarah Coomes back!
The book was good, but predictable. My favorite part of this book is the hint at a romance between Josh and Maeve. There's much more to come!!!! I really want Sarah Coomes to come back as the narrator. She really brought the individual characters to life. It's very difficult to tell who is "speaking" with Caroline Lennon. She cannot make the voices different enough. I hate it when a narrator in a series is changed. Of course occasionally a better narrator is brought on, but that is usually not the case.
The murder case was pretty good, but I was able to figure most all of it out long before it the book revealed the killers. Jane Casey is an excellent writer and I only wish she would release these books faster.

These books just keep getting better and better. I have been hooked since the 1st book. The characters get more fleshed out and real with each book. Please Jane keep them coming !! My only complaint is that Sarah Coomes (previous narrator) was a better choice for Maeve's voice I think.

Best Book of the Series So Far
I raced through every single Maeve Kerrigan book in less than two weeks. Absolutely, totally addicted. I love, love, love this series.
A Cutting Place is the best in the lot, I think. Interesting how Casey's writing gets better and better. She has a tendency to be wordy, but she's been improving, especially over the last two books. Here the writing is PERFECT. Self-assured, direct, powerful. Not a word wasted.
The crime investigation is much better than all the other books. It's adventurous, varied, with twists and turns, and not TOO many overdone secondary characters. There are less long, interminable interviews and more direct investigation and sleuthing of clues, more action, even a very hilarious undercover scene. I do not read these books for the crime, which is mostly dull I hate to say, although this one as well as After the Fire was really good.
It's the personalities and relationships where she really shines, and this one just blew me away. I cannot remember another novel (recently) where I have been so completely involved with the characters. I listened breathless. I was blown away. I was so very affected by Maeve's story and what happens to her, and the evolving relationship with Derwent. It was so beautifully done. SO powerful. The emotions are real and big and believable. I've listened to a few chapters over and over. Masterful writing. She conveys so much in few words. Only a woman could have written this.
And the narrator was simply fantastic. it has been pure joy listening to her performance again and again.
Now I am in withdrawal and truly in mourning that I'm done with the series for now. Simply cannot wait for the next installment.

I was like most listeners that are leaving reviews very disappointed that they changed the narrator after so long. But I just love the storyline so I kept listening and this is probably the best book in the series, so don’t let it deter you from listening. The new narrator did an amazing job. Excellent series
Unlike another reviewer I love Caroline Lennon over Sarah Coombes narration. With all due respect I almost gave up on the books due to her narration. In fact I went back and read the books that Sarah narrated and listened to the books with Caroline. Sarah’s narration was very off as to conversation-up and down and I’d get lost in her voice and lose the plot. So, thanks for changing narrators.
