Summary

A thrilling story of the secret services, their enemies and the society they operate in, building with unrelenting suspense to a superb climax, The Crocodile Hunter is Gerald Seymour writing at the top of his powers.

In the office at MI5 where he works, they call Jonas Merrick 'the eternal flame'. It isn't a compliment. It's because he never goes out. He never goes undercover, never does surveillance, never goes with the teams that kick down the doors or seize the suspects off the street. He commutes into work and sits at his desk and then he goes home. But Jonas has qualities the hot-shots fail to notice: a steely concentration, a ruthless ability to focus and find the enemy hiding in plain sight.

Hearing of a British Jihadi returning from Syria with murderous plans, Jonas sends out for a telling photograph: a crocodile, almost submerged, just its eyes above water as it waits for unsuspecting prey to drink at the riverbank. Coming ashore near Dover, Cameron Jilkes is a young man from a broken home and a failed education, trained in the harshest theatre of war, driven to rage by loss and pain. And this time, 'the eternal flame' must go out - to hunt the crocodile himself.

Play at 1.1 speed instead of normal speed

I really enjoyed this book, the story and the narration. Others have commented on the book so other than to say if you like Mick Herron, Le Carre, Deighton etc... I am sure you will enjoy this. Reason for writing a review is that when you enjoy an audible book you are keen for others to enjoy it too. I see a few people were unhappy with the narration on this. I found that if i put the narration at 1.1 speed instead of normal speed (which is an option in the Audible app) that slight increase makes it sound much better and I would even say more natural to the point where I wonder if somewhere along the line the speed was accidentally reduced from what it should be. I've had this issue occasionally on other Audible books and just thought i'd make this suggestion if anyone is struggling with the narration.

Sound was terrible

The narrator whispered too much which ruined the story. When he was telling the story it was fine. When he went into the main character you have to turn the volume right up. A real pain as then it would be to loud for the next bit.

Gripping

This is the six Gerald Seymour book I have read. I am totally addicted to his style of writing. Amazing storyline just gets better and better. Tension rises in the last five hours almost unbearable. Thank you

Starts strongly, but too many plot holes

The story starts strongly with intriguing main characters. By the end, though, too much of it became implausible.

An excellent and gripping story.

This has been an excellent and gripping story, very well narrated and highly plausible. I was, quite frankly, unable to leave it until I’d finished! Excellent.

Challenging on many levels.

I found it refreshing to be allowed to make up my own mind about the characters and their motivations. EI feel that too many writers set pen to paper with a fixed, binary perspective on 'right' and 'wrong.' The vocal characterisations suited me well by not attempting to 'upstage' the text.

Brave subject matter!

Can’t say enjoyed but respected the writing the reader is forced to empathise with the target almost to understand there egotistical drive for recognition and there thirst for adrenaline..

The old man is a great character his demeanour and the contemptuous manner he treats everyone dose not distract us the reader from the responsibility he faces..

The only character that is not ego driven is than old crocodile hunter

Well done good thought provoking book

Gerald Seymour never disappoints

If you have ever considered what sort of person would become a terrorist willing to harm people that they have no connection to read this
