Summary

Let me repeat myself, so we can be very clear. Women are not the enemy. We must protect them from themselves, just as much as we must protect ourselves.

Imagine a world in which witchcraft is real. In which mothers hand down power to their daughters, power that is used harmlessly and peacefully.

Then imagine that the US president is a populist demagogue who decides that all witches must be imprisoned for their own safety, as well as the safety of those around them—creating a world in which to be female is one step away from being criminal....

As witches across the world are rounded up, one young woman discovers a power she did not know she had. It's a dangerous force, and it puts her on the top of the list in a global witch hunt.

But she—and the women around her—won't give in easily. Not while all of women's power is under threat.

The Coven is a dazzling global thriller that pays homage to the power and potential of women everywhere.

A gritty yet glorious romp

Once in a while it's great to indulge in the simple pleasures of a good-versus-evil romp through a fantasy version of an otherwise recognisable world. That's exactly what you get from The Coven which I listened to on a serious of long car journeys and it made the miles fly by. It's been EXTREMELY entertaining, a proper piece of fun, and beautifully performed by talented actress Rebecca Perfect. I don't want to spoil anything plot-wise but I thought the whole system of how magic works in the world of The Coven was a great piece of world-building, and the authenticity of the geographical and social/political setting of the world portrayed by Lizzie really anchored the wilder fantasy elements of the tale. There are some adult themes and it's genuinely dark and gritty in places, so maybe not one for younger children, but I'd recommend this for older teens and adults looking for a holiday page-turner.

Not worth the time to listen

Initially gripping, it rapidly becomes irritating. Overwritten (everything is like something else) and annoyingly read.

disappointing

A very sharply pitched irritating voice in the audio did not assist in the enjoyment of this rather underwhelming tale. There is little if any plot development and zero rationship built with the bland characters.......what a waste.
