Summary

The perfect escape....

Gabrielle Adams has it all - brains, beauty, a handsome fiancé and a dream job in publishing.

Until, one day, everything changes.

The ‘Underground Killer’ takes his victims when they least expect it: standing on the edge of a busy Tube platform, as they wait for a train to arrive through the murky underground tunnels of London.

Gabrielle soon learns that being a survivor is harder than being a victim, and she struggles to return to her old life. Desperate to break free from endless nightmares, she snatches up an opportunity to run a tiny bookshop in a picturesque cove in rural Cornwall.

She thinks she’s found the perfect escape, but has she swapped one nightmare for another?

Suspense and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced thriller, set amidst the spectacular Cornish landscape.

Perfect quick listen

Wanted a quick and free listen, was apprehensive with it being free but it didn’t disappoint. Well written, I thought the storyline would be predictable but the writer certainly led you to believe it was, and then completely catches you off guard. Smashed through this on a day off sick.

A good summer crime read

I love L J Ross crime novels and end up listening to them several times over. I enjoy the development and depth of characters and the pictures the author paints of people and place. This story set in a remote Cornish cove is an easy read and easy listen - with enough intrigue and twists to keep the reader interested. Enjoyable.

Easy On the Ear

A typical cosy crime book. Easy to listen to, no blood or violence. story a bit disappointing. But all in all not bad. This one was free. Not sure as I would use a credit up on another though..

Not bad bar the terrible Irish accent!

The story was entertaining but I found the absolutely terrible Irish accent of Luke Malone to be very distracting and hard to get past. 😩

Rubbish

No wonder this is a freebie. Awful narration, even slowed down to 85.

Not engaging just gave up, specially with the neurotic voice and stupid accents.

very disappointed

i look so forward my favorite author publishing new books 👌however for me instead of getting an explosive storyline i felt all i got was a damp squid .
I actually fell asleep on 3 occasions listening to the narrator.
I found her voice so soothing great for sleep but not enough oomph to keep me listening to thiscstory for long.
as i always persevere with a book that i find anything but riveting but i really struggled to finnish this one.
Sorry ! but sadley this has been the only one of all L J Ross books i personally have not enjoyed ( and read them all ) 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Great story and full of twists

Only read L J Ross Ryan books which are brilliant. Not hard to believe she can turn her writing to just about anything and capture the reader. Hope it’s not too long before her next work😀

Is Luke a Hunk or a Horror

Gabrielle has OCD brought on by a vicious attack. All that is important and needs to be given respect. Gabrielle is shallow, self obsessed and unintelligent - all that is a bit tedious really. She clatters along using all the 'nice' people she meets in Cornwall. She shacks up with the enigmatic Luke very readily. She moves in with him because she feels insecure. She thinks an intruder might have got into her office and be after her to bump her off, but carries on drifting from one set piece to another.
I dont know. Maybe it's just that the plot is trying so hard to be mysterious, thrilling, romantic, suspenseful, and so on, that you see it as a bit like one of those silent films, a set of cliff-hangers with manic or rather stupid bits in between.

Free with Audible, which is very nice of them, but I dont think I'm free to waste my time ....

Weak

All I can say is … it was free. I’ve read the later works and they are ok. This must have been a very early work.

Mills & Boon meets Agatha Christie

This is OK - a gentle, inoffensive listen, quite short, and well narrated. A better editor would have corrected the cultural errors, e.g. it’s Marge Simpson, not Madge. I won’t be rushing to listen to any more by this author.

The Cove

Whilst I enjoyed the book, the story and the characters, I couldn't stop myself from comparing the quality to the authors other books & characters. I am an avid follower of DCI Ryan books and slowly getting to know Gregory. I am sure I will get into this type of book, as Louise starts to unravel more books. Will definitely still buy them, as shexis one of my favorite authors. The narration was excellent.
