Summary

The gripping detective crime thriller featuring Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent from the Top Ten Sunday Times bestselling author.

At first glance, Jellicoe Close seems to be a perfect suburban street – well-kept houses with pristine lawns, neighbours chatting over garden fences, children playing together.

But there are dark secrets behind the neat front doors, hidden dangers that include a ruthless criminal who will stop at nothing.

It’s up to DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent to uncover the truth. Posing as a couple, they move into the Close, blurring the lines between professional and personal as never before.

And while Maeve and Josh try to gather the evidence they need, they have no idea of the danger they face – because someone in Jellicoe Close has murder on their mind.

Critic reviews

"I loved, loved loved The Close. If you haven’t read Jane Casey, start immediately – excellent police procedurals with delicious sexual tension." (Marian Keyes, the Sunday Times No.1 bestseller)

"I loved the simmering tension between the main characters, the tightly plotted mystery and the way that the darkness grew relentlessly to take over seemingly perfect suburbs – a brilliant example of nothing being as it seems." (Harriet Tyce, Sunday Times bestselling author)

"As deeply satisfying yet intensely moreish as all its predecessors – I devoured, I loved it, I want the next one ASAP, please." (Lucy Mangan, author of Are We Having Fun Yet?)

Superb

Another triumph from Jane Casey following the detective work of Maeuve and Josh. Working undercover this was well plotted. There was quite a bit of humour as always and again superb narration by Caroline Lennon. I hope there are more to come

Intriguing

The plot slither is one way, then another and then back again and then round about again as do the characters. One minute. You think you know who done it ! the next minute you’re not sure.

Fantastic

Without a doubt my favourite and the best book of the series so far. Although I have to say it wouldn't be the same without Caroline Lennon narrating it. Just brilliant.

Loved it

Really enjoyed this latest book in the Maeve Kerrigan series. The tension between Josh and Maeve is so well written. You can feel it. Great plot and super narration as ever by Caroline Lennon. Looking forward to the next book already.

OUTSTANDING!

If you are a fan of the Maeve Kerrigan series, you'll love this. If she's new to you, I suggest you start at the beginning of the series as there are references to events that occured in previous books and the characters fill out and become more rounded as the series progresses.
As well as the usual superb crime story, Jane Casey further develops her two main characters, DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent, (while not neglecting the other players), which gives the book even more interest. They are sent to the edge of London, working undercover, posing as a dog sitting boyfriend and girlfriend but really watching activities in another house in the close. How they mingle with their new neighbours, and how their professional relationship blurs at the edges is skilfully told while the narrative continues, identifying various suspects and introducing the usual selection of red herrings. While undertaking this work, Maeve is also leading a murder enquiry in her usual stamping ground, so has to juggle the two cases at the same time.
It's a compelling listen, made all the more so by the excellent Caroline Lennon, who once again does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Maeve, her colleagues and her contacts.
The only problem with this book is that it makes you immediately want to become immersed in the next one!

So disappointed

I have loved the Maeve Kerrigan series since the start, but this one bored the pants off me. And not a single mention of what happened to Rob either.

Excellent

I love this series and yes, it was a departure from the norm but I needed that following a string of unsatisfying listens this year. This was a palate cleanser. In fact, my main issue with it, my only issue with it, was the fact that the whole premise was enabled through an abuse of power, privilege and position, and there’s too much of that in the real world, but I can forgive it in fiction. No spoilers, but I really can’t see the police utilising two highly paid officers in such a role based on little to no evidence. Next please.

Absolutely love this series

I just discovered this fantastic series. I read this one first but have now gone back to the beginning. This book is different from her earlier ones and I hope Jane Casey will write more along this line - melding mystery with the Mauve Josh story line. I am so looking forward to the next book. Casey is a fantastic on police procedure, intricate plots, and personal relationships between the police officers. I am really enjoying her earlier books but this one stands out.

Great story; terrible narration.

Despite being a fan of all Jane Casey’s MAEVE KERRIGAN books, this is my last one with this narrator, who has absolutely RUINED them. With her grating tone, odd inflection, and lack of variation, Caroline Lennon’s narration makes it very difficult to get drawn into the story, and nearly impossible really know the ‘voice’ of the individual characters. So dissaponting!

Did no one producing these books READ THE REVIEWS OF BOOKS 8 & 9? They say the same as this review; that the stories were great, but the narration was awful. I’ve struggled through books 8 and 9, but this one, #10, is the last with this narrator. I can’t even finish it. PLEASE bring back Sarah Coomes! I mourn the loss of these engrossing stories and wonderful characters.

Not the best in the series

Lacked some of the drama and tension of other books in the series. And Sarah Coombes is missed - she was a much better fit for the character than Caroline Lennon, who is altogether too plummy-voiced to be believable as Maeve.

meh

I think the whole point of the plot was to give Maeve and Josh a chance to spend time together to solidify their feelings. However, the author threw in yet another barrier to their relationship at the end. the plot ended up convoluted and disappointing. I really needed to hear a good book and only made it halfway through. if it was eligible. I'd return it

Obsessed with this series. Great book!

I truly love this series. Always look forward to the next one, this one had a long wait! But it delivered. Ending already has me looking forward to the next one. Not a fan of the narrator though. She makes Mauve feel older than she seems by the writing, and her male character voice misses the mark. The earlier audiobooks in the series were narrated better. But the book itself was really enjoyable!

Another Enjoyable Maeve mystery

I really enjoy this mystery series and always look forward to the next installment. Narration is good and story moves at a good pace.
