Summary

The Cat Who Caught a Killer by L T Shearer is a charming cosy crime listen for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club and S. J. Bennett’s The Windsor Knot.

Meet Conrad. Conrad is a cat. You’ve never met a detective like him before.

Neither has Lulu Lewis, until he walks into her life one summer’s day. Mourning the recent death of her husband, the former police detective had expected a gentle retirement, quietly enjoying life on her new canal boat, The Lark, and visiting her mother-in-law in a nearby care home.

But when her mother-in-law dies suddenly in suspicious circumstances, Lulu senses foul play and resolves to find out what really happened. And a remarkable cat named Conrad will be with her every step of the way . . .

Critic reviews

A charming, off-beat story with some great characters and wonderful London locations. I’m sure it will make readers long for their own canal boat, and quite possibly - if they don’t already have one - their own talking cat. Conrad is a delight (SJ Bennett, author of The Windsor Knot and A Three Dog Problem)
A captivating, charming and gentle tale, perfect for all those who love their crime cozy (Peter James, author of the Roy Grace series)
Charming and original. This book is the cat’s whiskers (Anthony Horowitz, author of The Word is Murder and the Sherlock Holmes novels The House of Silk and Moriarty)

Dreadful narration.

The narrator is very stunted and sounds like an automation. It really spoils the story.

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed listening to this book. Narration was very good. I wasn't sure at first about a talking cat. However I soon became fond of Conrad and his wise counsel. On the whole a very enjoyable story.

Had high hopes

I loved the idea of this book but it started out missing a lot of background of the main character.
Not the cat, who is the by far the best character. Only later into the book did it expand on this like an afterthought. The over description of making mint tea becomes dull quickly. It’s an easy mystery to solve and I almost skipped to the end just to hear the outcome. Get it if it’s free.

Amazing and a must read if you like cosy crime! 🤩

The narrator really brought this fantastic story to life, and I adore the voice they gave to Conrad, made me love him even more. A very engaging story that kept my inner detective trying to figure out whodunnit! A must read if you enjoy cosy crimes such as Marlow Murder Club, etc.

Predictable but quite fun

The story is entertaining although too easily predictable. I found the narrator fairly unendurable; every phrase is delivered with such emphasis that you expect a vital plot point to be revealed, when quite often it is only a simple description. The writing is a bit lazy; Emily is described by almost every person as “a lovely lady” - could the adjectives used not have been more varied? I liked Conrad, though he did seem to have some very un-catlike spheres of knowledge! But it was an undemanding listen and I was satisfied by the expected unmasking of the villains!

Good story

It’s a good story and I enjoyed it, but there are a few too many repetitive descriptions of the main character making tea/coffee/dishes of water!

I love this book, it is a joy to listen too!

This book is wonderful, I absolutely love it. Imogen Church is one of my favourite narrators and when I saw she was reading this book I bought it, as her performance is fantastic. Once again it was like listening to an old friend who you haven't seen for a few months and you leave off from where you left off, superb. L T Shearer is my new favourite author, this book is excellent, it's whimsical, heartfelt, sweet and funny and sad, with some truly nasty people who I would hit in the face with an open palm if I met them in real life! Lulu is lovely and Conrad the Cat is amazing and insanely intelligent, I look like an idiot. Their relationship really is lovely. I have said before that if my mum's cat Opal could talk she would sound like Dame Helen Mirren and we would hang out and watch YouTube videos of cats. I really hope there are many more books to come in the series as this is a great story that deserves to grow!

Couldn’t stop listening

This came as a recommendation from my step daughter who said it was the perfect book for me. She was 100% right, I loved everything about it & was really sad that I’d finished listening in 2 days. The most entertaining book I have listened to for a very long time. It made me happy.
