Summary

Nellie Rivera is trading traffic for tranquility. When the quiet streets of small-town Montana beckon, she leaves Denver behind and moves to Calamity. It would be the perfect adventure if not for Cal Stark.

When her archnemesis dares to show his face one Saturday morning, declaring he is moving there too, she vows to make his life a misery. The town isn’t big enough for the both of them and besides...

She was here first.

Cal has been a thorn in her side since high school. He might have bullied her back then, but she’s not a modest teenager anymore and has learned a few plays of her own. If all goes to plan, she’ll run the former pro quarterback out of town within a month.

There’s only one problem. Cal has the same plan. He wants Calamity bad enough to pull out all the stops. And after one kiss, she realizes that he doesn’t play fair.

Too unhappy

3.25 stars
Well written. Enemies to lovers in a sad and not fun way. The reasons for the antagonism between Cal and Nellie ran deep and were meaningful, but just had too much sadness and animosity and went on too long to make their story enjoyable. As individuals, liked Cal; but, Nellie often came across as whinny - liked her better in The Brazen where she seemed stronger and more capable. Loved the previous books in the Calamity series and looking forward to more of the series.

Much too slow - sped up to 1.8x, but the male & female narrations seemed to be different speeds, so this didn’t work well. Male narrator, Connor Crais, did a wonderful job - except for Harry’s voice. Female narrator - Cindy Kay sounded whispery / strangled - didn’t like listening to her chapters.

Slow start, but gets better

I loved the previous 3 books, but struggled a bit with this one. I'm glad I stuck with it, for the lovely ending, but the angsty, harking back to High School wrongs definitely dragged on way longer than I would have liked. Had this been the first book in the series, I wouldn't have bothered with the others, so I'm glad it's number 4, as I would have hated to miss out on the others.
Connor Crais' narration was great, and I've heard him narrate before. The female narrator was new to me, and I struggled with her whispery narration and had to keep upping the volume on her chapters.
