Summary
MEET DETECTIVE ALICE ROSSI IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW CRIME SERIES.
A brand-new mystery from #1 bestselling author Helen H. Durrant that will have you gripped from start to explosive finish.
A female serial killer with a deadly agenda. The detective who must stop her. Luxury holiday lodges in the stunning Peak District. The game begins . . .
Callum is lured to an isolated boathouse by an attractive older woman. When she gets him alone, she knocks him out with a single blow. As he wakes up, her voice comes out of the darkness, “You're a sprat to catch a mackerel.”
Surrounded by hills and lakes, Still Waters is home to a close-knit community of wealthy retirees. It's an unlikely setting for violence. The police don't take Callum's disappearance seriously: he's 24-years-old, after all. But Callum's mother, a Still Waters resident, knows that something is very wrong.
Then a body is discovered floating in the lake. Head bashed in. But it's not Callum.
And someone tweets: Come out to play one last time, Alice. Still Waters run deep. #MadHatter.
That's when DCI Alice Rossi is called in. She's back.

Simple and predictable listen
Well narrated but simple. Prefer a more complex listen. Wasn’t drawn in by the characters.

Not for me
I enjoy crime fiction but unfortunately I’ve become bored a quarter the way in and abandoning this. Honestly cannot even be bothered to skip through to find out how it ends.
What a waste of a credit.

Disappointing
This whole story seemed ridiculous on so many levels. The motives were weak; the abilities of the detective were hard to believe in & certainly not warranting notice by superiors; the end twist was expected and the detectives conclusions around it, unbelievable. Although the narrator was fine, she didn't seem the right choice for this protagonist who we are told is experienced and a bit older. I'm really surprised at so many good reviews! A shame as I have enjoyed other stories from the same author.

Brilliant
Brilliant work, twists and turns and an atmosphere of trepidation rippling through the book. The narrator was perfect for the book.

sent me to sleep mid chapters
storyline really did not grip me at all and i found myself nodding off every time i tried to listen to a new chapter .
Usually i never leave a book before end but this one was my first .
The narrative was not to my liking either 🤷♀️ so it’s a no from me

Baffled by the raving reviews
Honesty, this was the worst book I ever ever listened to and I would have returned if I could! I had to speed up the narration and after about 20 minutes, I genuinely couldn’t have cared less about the rest of the story. The narration is horrible, so boring and monotonous and the story isn’t much better.

The Ash Lake Murders
Format: audiobook
Narrator: Katie West
It’s refreshing to have a female serial killer and this one has a vendetta against DCI Alice Rossi but why?
There’s a nice twist in this book, one I didn’t see coming which is always a bonus.
There’s plenty of suspects to keep you guessing, I don’t want to say too much and risk spoilers so I’ll just say that this book is well worth the read.
The narrator does a great job, her delivery really keeps you totally immersed in the story.
