Challenges a lot of your assumptions
Addiction is a complex topic, and I don't think many of us understand well. It's often easier to write addicts off are selfish or lazy, but the nuances go far deeper than that.
If you're dealing with someone suffering form this cruel disease, then this book is well worth picking up. It'll give you a unique insight into their state of mind, and give you a clearer answer why some people can't "just quit". If you need some help in dealing with a loved one with this affliction, then the book is a great buy.

Made me understand myself
A friend from NA referred me to this book, he told me the book helped him understand why and how his addiction started. I do agree, but mainly what this book gave me was the understanding that my addiction isn't a personal problem and I shouldn't be ashamed. I am still working on fully immersing myself with the idea, but I have come further already then I though I would.
I think this book is a great resource if you have started your journey to getting better. It has a lot of useful information and is one of the few books out there that doesn't put blame on the individual.

Really useful information
As someone who used to work at the pain clinic, hearing about substance abuse and the opioid crisis is nothing new to me. Contrary to what many people believe, substance abuse is more common than you think. The issue is multidimensional and requires a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Environmental factor and social support from the people around the victim of substance abuse play a crucial role in rehabilitation and recovery. I find the information provided in this book quite accurate and love that it is presented in a compassionate, nonjudgmental way. The chapters are outlined in an easy to follow manner. The book even covers the scientific explanation of the various types of pain. I find the final chapter regarding natural remedy for substance abuse quite interested as you don't hear about them often in Western medicine and I appreciate that it was covered in the book as a supplementary treatment. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this audiobook and it did not impact my review.

Fight substance abuse on your terms.
Milton walks you through the entire opioid addiction process, describing at great lengths how drug addiction is so compelling and difficult to kick on your own.
We all tend to gravitate to a quick-fix solution for pain, discomfort, and mental anguish we may be faced with. Before you decide to embark on a precarious journey with any potent prescription meds, you need to be fully aware of the negative consequences.
A case in point, was my niece who developed chronic pain in her upper neck region and being a nurse ended up getting hooked on opioids. It ended up costing her job as a nurse. Had she listened this audiobook, she may have developed better coping strategies that might have kept her away from potent drugs.
I especially enjoyed the chapter that covered more natural approaches to getting over an opioid addiction.
If you’re looking for coping strategies for your current addiction or would like to be proactive and avoid being hooked on drugs, then consider listening to the sage advice in Milton’s audiobook.

Great Advice on Abuse of Opioids
I liked this audiobook; Firstly it explains what pain is and I think it's important to understand that first to then being able to know why people get addicted to opioids. I also loved the part about non medical techniques to heal like meditation and so on. Overall, I can recommend this book to anyone affected by this topic.

Relevant and Timely
This stuff may not be easy to hear, but it's important. It's astounding how big this issue is and the author takes care to have empathy while providing sound information that helps me understand further what side effects happen with certain opioids. Having the knowledge from this book can help someone use these responsibly if they have to be used at all. I appreciate that the author touches on non-drug options, however the reality is that some people may need opioids. It's a good idea to ask about other options as well. Such an informative book!
