Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian return in this essential novel set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The Empire is dead. Nearly two decades on from the Battle of Endor, the tattered remnants of Palpatine's forces have fled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. But for the heroes of the New Republic, danger and loss are ever-present companions, even in this newly forged era of peace.

Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is haunted by visions of the dark side, foretelling an ominous secret growing somewhere in the depths of space, on a dead world called Exegol. The disturbance in the Force is undeniable...and Luke's worst fears are confirmed when his old friend Lando Calrissian comes to him with reports of a new Sith menace.

After his daughter was stolen from his arms, Lando searched the stars for any trace of his lost child. But every new rumor only led to dead ends and fading hopes—until he crossed paths with Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin tasked with kidnapping a young girl.

Ochi's true motives remain shrouded to Luke and Lando. For on a junkyard moon, a mysterious envoy of the Sith Eternal has bequeathed a sacred blade to the assassin, promising that it will give him answers to the questions that have haunted him since the Empire fell. In exchange, he must complete a final mission: return to Exegol with the key to the Sith's glorious rebirth—the granddaughter of Darth Sidious himself, Rey.

As Ochi hunts Rey and her parents to the edge of the galaxy, Luke and Lando race into the mystery of the Sith's lingering shadow and aid a young family running for their lives.

Exogol hunt with ancient with throw in.

This book is the Empire Strikes Back to the final film in the Skywalker saga. Yet the taint of the final films diminishes this book. The author does a great job of explaining how Luke has extraordinary powers in the 8th film and helps to set up the 9th. It seems that comic book, tv shows and books do a better job than the films and they try their best to explain or justify the mistakes that have become canon.

I enjoyed the ancient with dimension of the book the most. Reminded me of Old Republic books.

Good voice performance but confusing and boring

William DeMerrit is on form with a wonderful characterisation of some great characters both new and old.
But that's just about all the be good I can say about it as the story is tremendously slow, boring with its repetitive events. If you wanted to follow Luke and Lando on a buddy adventure, this isn't it as we will in stead spend hours painstakingly chasing a couple they can never quite get to before their inevitable demise makes the trail run cold.
Ultimately it adds nothing to the lore of star wars either except for confusing the sequel trilogy even further. Luke knowing about exegol? Luke and Lando meeting Rey's parents and a sith ghost? all information that could have been useful, forcing me to consider the retcons here a borderline plot hole. If you really want to consume all star wars content, this is probably the better way to do it than reading it, but I'd advise spending your credits on something else first like thrawn or high Republic.

Fills in Plot Holes at the Expense of its Own Plot

The book fills in and explains a lot of the gaps in the sequel trilogy with Rise of Skywalker benefiting in particular. It does a fine job at this at the expense of often losing sight of its own plot with the book being at its best when it focuses on Luke and the new Sith threat. The book is at its best when it gives you more Lando and Luke as I believe this is the first canon novel to fill in the gap between episode 6 and 7 with classic characters.

Saying that, one of the new threads is never resolved as there are 9 Sith 'Ringwraiths' that are brought up in a big fight scene but never mentioned again. Other plots that tie in to Rise of Skywalker come to a screeching and unnatural end just so they tie in with the movie.

Presentation wise like all the other Star Wars audiobooks there are lots of sound effects and music which i really feel add to the immersion. The narrator is a chameleon, as I often forgot it was the same person narrating different characters. I actually had to look up if there were multiple cast members he does such a good job.

Overall, I would recommend it if you want to get answers to some rushed things in the sequel trilogy. If you are looking for a great standalone story there are probably better options.

Enjoyed it

I was a bit skeletal when it comes to stories around the sequel trilogy as I didn't enjoy them but I was surprised I liked it. Good narration by Adam Christopher for the voices of the characters. It fills in a lot of plotholes the film's left out. It tells a lot more about Ray's parents and more about the Siths home world of Exegol.

Events leading up to episode seven.

This was a great story to learn about Ray's family. It tells you the event leading up too episode seven. This was a good book showing how two of the main actors grouped together.

Good back story for Rey & 'Rise of Skywalker'

Some great detail and added depth to back stories for Rey's parents, Luke and Lando. Dragged a little bit in places, but really fleshed out Luke and Lando's characters and overall very enjoyable.

Awful

One of the worst Star Wars novels available. Talentless narration and amateur prose, plot, and characterisation by the writer. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Great narration, great story

I enjoyed this immensely, especially the Sith lore elements. Brilliantly narrated with musical score accompaniment and lightsaber hums, R2-D2 beeps, blaster fire, the lot.

A very good bridge between what we've seen in the Original Trilogy (OT), the Mandalorian, Ahsoka and The Force Awakens. I despise TFA and that entire trilogy (because I'm old) but this book makes me more inclined to better understand the events of the sequels.

I'd be very interested if there were further books exploring the Sith lore described in this book, it was fascinating and was the one constant that kept me turning the page (or listening, at least).

This was my first SW novel in the Disney era, having lamented about the death of the old EU (now referred to as Legends). I'm pleased to say that I am a fan of Star Wars again (thanks largely to the new TV shows but also this book.

Fills in some gaps with an interesting story

The story gives a lot of backstory to the rise of skywalker but I would not recommend reading it before watching the movie. Nice to follow luke for once and I like all the sith lore.
